Hello Friends,

My wife and I are participating in the New Bri Tri on Saturday. We have not been there for that event, so we don't know what to expect really. We are participating in Ironman CDA at the end of June, so this race is just about the open water swim really. We just want to enjoy the day with a few hundred other triathlon enthusiasts. Have any of you done this event? If so, any words of wisdom?

All the best,

Bill Nevala

I'll be there for the 3rd time. NOW tri top, right arm full of tattoos, say hi if you see me.

Don't expect a well organized packet pick up/body marking area, and people will pile on top of each other near the bike out/in of the transition area.  The rest of the the transition area has been less crowded but tapered so the traffic lanes go from nice and wide to shoulder rubbing tight, not too big of a deal for me in the past.

The swim is a clockwise triangle, starts in knee deep water from the beach.  On the bike, there is one hill where I want to be in my small ring, Emily posted its position last year.  It's a pretty rolling course, with a couple tight 90* turns, and I've always measured the course shorter than 14 miles.  Oddly, my garmin has always had the run at a 5k, not 3 miles, almost all on park paths.  I hate the hill about 1/4 mile into the run, it comes just when my legs are finding themselves after the bike.  One water stop, at a "T" section on the course, could cause some problems but I've never seen one.

Hope that's helpful, and accurate.  Good luck at CDA

Dustin

Thankfully they did a bit better with transition last year, I thought, so hopefully that will be the case this year.

Part of this event's charm is the very laid back feel.

Here's the link to last year's thread. Page 2 I have a description of the bike course:

The lakes are still pretty chilly.  I'd certainly wear a wetsuit if you have one.

Anytime you can legally wear a wetsuit it is recommended. Good luck everyone and I hope to see you there. You'll recognize me as the guy who decided to start swimming again 6 days ago .

Mndiver - are we going to play tag again on the bike? :D

Hope to see some of you out there. I'll be rocking a NOW tri top, ride a black/red Felt B2 and am tattooed, but not as heavily as DTraitor.

Ha! Yea I doubt it this year. I'm just hoping to make it through the race in one piece. I have been purposely pushing off training as long as possible due to a late season race this year. About two weeks ago it dawned on me I had a race in two weeks and I really had not done anything as far as speed work on the run and almost no swimming and biking. It will be fun seeing how everything responds tomorrow to trying to go "hard". Does look like we are going to have a great day.

I thought I was going to be out there volunteering, after getting a last minute email from Randy (you guys probably got it too).  I replied that I could help, but I haven't heard anything yet to confirm.   At this point I am making other plans for Saturday.

Have a great race!  It  looks like ideal weather. It will be chilly in the morning but don't forget your sunblock!!!

I showed up, with a buddy, after a 15 mile bike ride, to cheer on a friend - a triathlon virgin who was happy to complete his first tri.  I was not competing, nor volunteering (though I later "served" at a busy intersection to fill an obvious need), but I thoroughly enjoyed the day and the venue.

BEAUTIFUL day.  At least Randy and Frontrunner chose their day well.  Beyond that...well...based on what I saw, it was not a well-run event.

I think I saw Me-Xman (sorry, I don't know his real name).  I said the very intelligent, "Hey, is that you?" as he was running by.  Cripes.  Just how does anyone answer that??  ("No, I'm someone else!")?  Then I quickly tried to clarify, asking if it was "Xman."  By then of course, he was past.  Maybe it was Me_Xman??  If so, ummmm, nice-to-meetcha.  Maybe.

So my buddy, Luke, finished his first triathlon.  I'm very proud of him.  He's been a great runner for a long time...many marathons under his belt.  Finally venturing into triathlons.  And he is a an army Lt. Colonel who has served this country for nearly 20 years including combat tours in Kosovo and Iraq.  Respect and congrats Luke!

And respect and congrats to others (Xman!) who were there!

Scott. HAHAHA! I was not there. Racing Buffalo tomorrow in Oly race.
You've got to look for County Cycles/Gopher Wheelmen jersey or skinsuit dude and I'm about your age.
That was funny.

It was great to meet everyone at the New Bri Tri yesterday. Wendy and I had a great race and we had fun. I personally thought the event was very fun, enjoyable, and a perfect day. I did not find much fault in the event overall. The bike course was fun. The one thing I did not see on the bike course was signs or markings for direction. The race seemed to rely on the volunteers pointing where to turn. I did my best to remember all of the streets I had to turn at, but in the heat of the moment in unfamiliar territory, I am glad the volunteers were there to point us in the right direction. There was a left hand turn that had us moving to the turn lane while autos were trying to do the same. It was a bit sketchy for those, but I made it through fine. My wife on the other hand said she had to stop and wait for the cars to move. She had to un-clip her shoes to stop.

The swim seemed to be longer than 0.5 miles based on my time and what I heard other people saying. Oh well, no harm no foul. I am faster at all 3 events this year, so I was pleased. It was a good race overall. I would come back again for sure.

We had fun. It was a beautiful morning. I got to put on some tight spandex, a rubber batman suit, go for swim in nice lake, ride my bike fast, run through a nice park, say "Hi and thanks," to every volunteer and policeman I saw, and finish smiling with so many other happy people.

A+ day!!!

All the best,

Bill Nevala

P.S. See you all in Trinona next Sunday!

I volunteered at the "hot corner"...the big intersection where bikes were coming from 3 directions and cars from 4.  I wasn't an official volunteer though - my buddy and I biked down there to watch, saw a dire need for some extra help, and pitched in for a while.

There was a policeman there to officially direct the car traffic, but he was not in uniform.  I think he was a reservist or something, and I don't know why he wasn't in uniform - he would have had more success had he been in uniform and been more assertive.  I saw him get hollered at by a few unhappy motorists.

Anyone seen official results yet?  They're not yet up on the Frontrunner site.  (Another example of the "sharpness" of Frontrunner.

Glad it was a great day and that people enjoyed the day!

I wish Trinona could be on 6/2 or 6/3 this year.
Buffalo 1700+ attendance was too big for my liking.
BTW for Buffalo, the volunteers and coordination were 1st class!
Love the bike route and all its 1st class traffic coordination.
Top class race operation.

I had a great time.

Good seeing you there Dustin.  I was comparing this year's results to last years.  Do you realize that we finished with almost the exact same time in 2011?

I'm on the tail end of a stress fracture recovery, so no running for me.  My relay partner didn't show up, so my buddy's girlfriend volunteered to run for me at the spur of the moment.  That's how we roll in the NOW club.

The event seemed pleasantly more organized than in years past.  Full results are up now.  The weather was great and everyone was just nice and laid back.   I like having just a single distance at a race.  You're in - you're out and then on to yard work or gradation parties.
