Subject: Coconut Water

Ok, I have heard all the hype on coconut water so I just went out and purchased a case of it since I am a big fan of chocolate milk. Reading the nutritional label on both shows that it is much lower in calories, fat, sodium and protein but has more potassium than chocolate milk.

I have to say I'm not sure how you all do it but I give you credit as this stuff is horrible to drink. Thought maybe it was just because it wasn't cold. Ya, nothing changed when it was cold. Not sure if you can mix anything with it or might just have to shot gun the can.

Going cheap, 11 cans of Coconut water..

I love that stuff, but I always thought it is bad for you.

Just send the 11 cans to me.

It is super gross tasting in my opinion. However, if it is very cold and I have just completed a long hard workout in the heat it actually goes down pretty easily.

I haven't heard any of the hype surrounding it, but the absolute best coconut water is right out of the coconut, of course. Had it once in the Middle East - bought on at a local market, paid the guy one dinar and he hacked a coconut open with a machete and popped a straw in it. In that heat, and in that place, that stuff was incredible. Nectar of the Gods.

The Goya brand canned stuff..... eh, not too bad, but the chunks of coconut in it get annoying. The Zico brand stuff - totally gross.
But, any of it chilled on a REALLY how day when you're thirsty... I think it's a great thirst quencher.

As a post-workout drink? Ya got me... but, I'll stick with chocolate milk or O.J.

The Zico brand the only one that I find palatable is the choclate flavor.  One brand I find more palatable is Vita Coco.

Excellent source of potassium and pre and post race hydration.

I find the stuff goes down easy after a workout verses powerade or gatorade. Its smoother. However, it can make you go to bathroom more frequently than the latter. At least that was how it was in my experience. Both coconut water and powerade/gatorade for me were great for not cramping. I always try to eat a banana a few hours before the workout too.

Love that stuff. Pack it cold in my cooler for after soccer games, long races and training sessions away from home.

Try O.N.E. Coconut Water before you give up on it.  Most brands of coconut water are barely palatable to me because they are in cans or plastic bottles.  I don't notice the nasty aftertaste from O.N.E.

Everything I've ever read about it suggests it has the perfect natural electrolyte balance to essentially replace a gatorade or other sport drink.  Since I only use that type of drink for training endurance and/or heat, I have tried it during a long workout.  It upset my tummy the way that gatorade does not.  Has anyone had luck using it as an actual electrolyte supplement during training?

My wife is addicted to O.N.E.

I can't drink the stuff.  Doesn't taste right to me.

She gets it by the truckload at the 99c store.

The company I work for is doing some promotional packaging for Vita Coco and we had some samples.  I was going to try it until I read the tiny print on the carton that said "Taste may vary".

A couple weeks ago I drank a liter of it during the second half of my long ride.  It was hot that day, so the bottle warmed up and it didn't taste as good as it does when it's cold, but it was still good and seemed to work fine for me.

you put the lime in the coconut...you drink em both up.

I don't mind it. Wouldn't buy it though.

Ick, I can't stand coconut water.

I like real coconut milk, as in, the kind you get straight out of the coconut.

Wife loves the stuff.  I, on the other hand, would rather drink milk 2 weeks past its expiration date that has been left out all day on the beach in the middle of July.

I've had coconut water from a fresh coconut in Cape Verde many times, and what's in those cans doesn't taste the same at all.  I'll try some other brands off this thread, hopefully they don't taste like the junk I've been trying lately.

I can't begin to drink the plain coconut water, especially any with any pulp or chunks, but that is just a lifelong issue for me, I can't drink OJ with pulp either.  I usually buy the Zico Pineapple variety and I can handle that.  I can't remember which variety I tried, but I tried another fruit flavored one and it was nasty, pineapple is the only one I can get down easily.  I've mixed the plain with cranberry/pomegranate juice and been able to tolerate it that way.  I've never tried it during a workout or race as I've heard it can be a bit of a natural laxative, but I do sometimes drink it the day before a hard training etc or after a workout.  It's an acquired taste.  I've been giving it plain to my kids and they drink it right down, it is great for when they are sick and need to be sure they are staying hydrated and such.

Why the comparison between coconut water and chocolate milk?  Seems like those are two completely different products doing two completely different things?..
