Pre-race routine:

stayed at my brother's place about 40mi away. So I had to get up at 4am. But it was good to have been up for awhile before the race.
Event warmup:

none. I really need to find a way to warm up.
Swim
  • 33m 55s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 04s / 100 yards
Comments:

ugly swim. even for me. First time in a lake since the end of last season. As we were setting up transition they announce that the water was too warm for a wet suit. crap.
I struggled through the whole swim. Early on, I really wanted to quit. I could not get myself together. Lots of contact, tiny bouts that I had trouble seeing and poor direction. I kept having to breath every other stroke because I could not control my heart rate which meant I would pull off course. Ugly ugly ugly.
What would you do differently?:

Practice in the open water. not worry so much about the damn swim anyway. I should just relax. The race starts on the run or at the earliest on the bike. gottta just relax about trying to race the swim.
I think that was the problem. I have worked hard on my swim and in the back of my mind I really wanted to go out and make a big improvement on the swim over my first oly last season. That backfired. But more importantly, I had a big race pr anyway.
Transition 1
  • 02m 52s
Comments:

this really went fine. most of the time was the long run out of the water to the bikes. no complaints. There are plenty of folks who raced 2:20 with my transition times.
Bike
  • 1h 13m 15s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.35 mile/hr
Comments:

really happy with this bike. big pick up over last season.
Transition 2
  • 02m 5s
Comments:

T2 was fine. pretty quick all things considered.
Run
  • 49m 57s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 02s  min/mile
Comments:

I did not expect to run this well. I am coming off of injury and just had not put the same miles in.
What would you do differently?:

I took walk breaks in the second lap. I wonder if I would have been faster if I had slowed my run pace and eliminated the walks. Don't know. This was a really good run time for me though. I will take it!!!
Post race
Warm down:

stand in a tent in the shade and pull myself together. It took a while. I had my hr high for a long time and it took some time to come back down.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My swim was really stressful. It was only 2 minutes slower than I hoped but it was really stressful.
Might have gone too hard too fast on the run.
I am happy with this reach for a few reasons. The result is a good one for me. The bike was fast. I was able to remain very uncomfortable on the run for a long time.
Mostly, I am happy with the swim. It was a train wreck. I honestly wanted to just quit about 200M in. And it never really got better. But I kept going and eventually it ended.

Event comments:

I was really happy over all with my race. I was hoping for 2:50.

My garmin mixed the bike and run together so I don't know how to separate the info. I started the bike in the 160's which is off the charts for me on the bike. I guess I ran hard in transition. Over the first 40min my hr worked down into the low 150's. I felt like I worked pretty hard on the bike. I tried to keep from killing myself uphill and coasting downhill. Tried to maintain a steady effort.

Lots of us got flustered with the last minute change to non-wetsuit.  Nice job making it up on the bike and run!
