Subject: Chamois Butt'r Question

First full IM in a few weeks and it occurred to me that I've never used Chamois Butt'r in a tri before.  Up to and including HIM distance I've been fine using Body Glide in the saddle area, so I put it on in the morning when I'm getting into my tri suit.  However, for all my long training rides, I use Chamois Butt'r and I'm not sure I'd be comfortable going 112 on the bike using just the Body Glide.  So, will the butter still be ok if I apply it in the morning before the swim or does the water hurt the effectiveness?  Do people typically apply it in T1?  Thanks in advance.

I usually apply it in T1 and then have a couple extra smaller packets that I carry on the bike. If I stop for anything I will reapply in a porta john.

I put it on before the swim and have a packet in T1 and special needs bag. If I remember, I slather more on during those times.

I carry the little packets but in most IM or HIMs don't reapply it during the race. I remember at IM Canada I did on the run due to some chaffing..it was dark so I did it on the go.

They sell individual packets at my local Performance Bike shop, and I put one of those in my T1 bag and my special needs bag.  I've never used the one in the special needs bag, but it's nice to know it's there.

Do you guys apply it to the skin or the chamois?  I've never used it but my rides are getting longer and I'm getting less comfortable...so I'm thinking about trying it.

I apply it to the skin, which then gets on the chamois as soon as I pull my shorts back up.

I apply the majority to the chamois. If I feel I need extra, then I'll put some on the skin as well - typically because I've been doing a lot of mileage. But, you typically apply a LIBERAL amount to the chamois itself. Pro riders put an insane amount on theirs - you don't have to go that far, but you definitely want to be confident that there is a nice layer.

Good idea Doug! I'll make a note to add that to my special needs bag or put one in my saddle bag on my next IM. I usually just have extra nutrition/hydration in my special needs bag.

A lot of people put it on in T1 for the IM.  I've worked the IM change tent several times.  No one is very shy about shoving their hand down their pants. :D
