Swim
Comments: I'm a weak swimmer, so I started outside. Did quite well. Got some drafts, passed a few people. Got to the boat, though, and it was a mess. I've only ever done 90-degree turns, so a 180-degree turnaround seemed awfully crowded. After that, though, it thinned out. I veered left a bit, then finished. What would you do differently?: Go a bit wider at the turn. Keep working on navigation. Transition 1
Comments: Still lightheaded getting out of the water, so that took some time. Forgot a towel, so putting on socks and shirt when wet was difficult. I slipped biking shorts on over my run/swim suit, since I don't have a "tri" suit - worked fine for a sprint. (For half-iron and iron, I'll do the full change for the better comfort.) What would you do differently?: Remember a towel! Also, I've biked without socks, and that was fine. I need to test running without socks. That would save 30 seconds, which is worthwhile in a sprint. (For longer distance, though, the comfort is worth the time.) Bike
Comments: Pretty good ride. I felt like I got stronger as the ride went on, so that was good. I felt a bit sluggish, but the speed and cadence were good, so maybe it was the rough roads. What would you do differently?: I could probably go a litte faster, but this was ok. I still need to adjust the fit some, as my seat is getting uncomfortable after 25 minutes or so. Also, I'm used to iron-distance, where I can take 30 minutes to get going. So, a longer warm up (either bike before swimming, or swim more) would probably be good. Transition 2
Comments: Gave my son a high-five, and had a good transition. Forgot to take off my biking shorts - I ran 50 yards before remembering, then stopped to get them off (I tossed them to the side, and picked them up after). What would you do differently?: Remember to take the biking shorts back off. Run
Comments: First mile felt sluggish, 2nd was ok, third felt great. Kept a pretty good pace, and didn't get passed. (As opposed to normal, when I start out fast, blow up, and get passed by everyone). So, this was quite nice. What would you do differently?: Maybe take it out a bit harder, since I have plenty of endurance. Still, this was a very good run for me. Post race
Warm down: Get Jacob set up for his race! Ran with him for the .75 mile bike. What limited your ability to perform faster: Speedwork. I'm training for iron-distance, so I've focused on distance instead of speed. Honestly, this was as good as I can expect to do in a sprint. Event comments: A great little race. Lots of fun. Very informal. Good for beginners. I did it as an example for my son (we BOTH got medals, we BOTH got shirts, etc.), but I had a great time for myself, too. This was fun, and the organizers put on about 8 of these per year, so we'll probably do more. Last updated: 2006-05-31 12:00 AM
