So, I was able to inspire my fiance to run in a 5k, which is a warmup for my tri in june. We have been running together for the past few weeks, and she has been complaining that her hands have been going numb 10 min into the run.

Does anyone have any insight?

does she run with her hands in fists and high up in front of her chest?
i know one person who got numb hands because he ran that way.

Don't hold her hand so tight or maybe not at all....

I know this seems unlikely, but is she breathing so hard and/or rapid that she is beginning to hyperventilate?  I, uh, have had a couple of experiences where I was hyperventilating and my hands went numb (followed by arms, legs and face).  The EMT's explained that it's a side effect of hyperventilation.

I've had that happen to me on a couple of occasions and it's because of my arm/hand position.  As long as I keep my hands down & loose, it's fine.

I would agree with the hand position. Especially if she has her elbows bent at an extreme angle. From my observations over the course of my years running, I have noticed that women have a tendency to do that more so than men. I've seen females running with their hands at almost shoulder level, and tucked in close to their chests. How they could do that, I still don't know.

is that why you see some runners running with their arms outstretched pointed down doing the "spirit fingers" thing with their hands???

I've never had the problem, Im just curious..

Yeah, probably. I drop my arms and shake 'em while I'm running. While they don't get numb, they do get stiff. No different than moving the hands around or shrugging your shoulders while on the bike.
