REVOLUTION3 Triathlon

Precipitation
Total Time = 2h 41m 13s
Overall Rank = 98/656
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 9/65
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 3:45 - pouring rain as expected. Made coffee, loaded truck and got on the road about 4:25am. Had coffee, bagel with PB, water on the way. Arrived 5:30 - parked in the grass (happy I would have 4WD later!). Used bathroom, set up transition with tupperwear container - saw it on BT the day before the race! Had a G1 and some more water.
Event warmup:

Put on the wetsuit - tough since I was wet from the rain. Went for a swim - the water was warmer than the air! The stood around for a long time - first they had to retrieve a buoy that had drifted. Then I had to wait for all other waves to go. Oh well, someone had to go last.
Swim
  • 25m 23s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 33s / 100 yards
Comments:

Good start, but went out a bit fast then had to cruise to let me heart settle. Misunderstood the course - I went around the side buoys, while others went inside with no issues. I guess since there was some drift, they ignored the normal rules - cost me some extra yards for sure. Once I got going and in rhythm, I had a good swim.
What would you do differently?:

Understand the rules on the buoys so I could have a more efficient route. I am happy with 8th in age group. I should get more OWS practice, but not sure how to get this.
Transition 1
  • 02m 30s
Comments:

A bit slow for me - maybe because of the rain. Maybe because it was the first of the year.
What would you do differently?:

Practice.
Bike
  • 1h 23m 25s
  • 25.68 miles
  • 18.47 mile/hr
Comments:

I feel like I had a good ride, but still not as strong as others. I worked on my biking a lot this off season and spring, so I am happy to have some improvement, but I expected more. I got passed on several downhills, but caught the same people on the climbs. Drank a gatorade during the ride and had a GU. That was my plan to sustain me for the run. The rain led to a few accidents - hope those people came out ok.
What would you do differently?:

Continue to work harder. Happy with my progress.
Transition 2
  • 02m 8s
Comments:

Smooth, no issues getting to spot. Stuff was in the tupperwear and dry. Towel dried feet, then tried to get socks on - not so great. Got shoes on easily though - I like my new speed laces.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - good plan for the rain.
Run
  • 47m 47s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

I was happy with my run - passed many more than passed me. Kept a strong pace in the rain. Did not take water and happy I didn't - probably saved me a bit of time. Had a good kick at the end and finished very strong.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - good run - wonder if I could have gone just a little bit harder.
Post race
Warm down:

Had a gatorade and wandered with my foil blanket. Rev3 is always prepared! Gathered up some Muscle Milk for later. Saw that I was 9th in age group, so didn't hang around in the mud and rain.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I do ride my bike in the rain, so I was ready for that. I have done several other races in the rain also, so no excuses with the weather. I need to find a way to practice my OWS - I always forget how different it is. Overall, just keep training, keep my weight down (this helped on the hills!) and keep a strong , confident mental approach - and it'll continue to be fun and successful.

Event comments:

Rev3 puts on a great race. These were nasty conditions, and Rev3 still executed - great attitudes from their team and volunteers, good swag, food, everything. I did the HIM the past 2 years, but did the Oly this year because I had a commitment on Sunday. Oly was done well, just like the HIM and was a good challenging course. Happy with the race and my performance, despite a nasty, rainy day.
