Pre-race routine:

had half an english muffin with peanut butter. Had an unwise spicy food dinner (spicy grilled chicken sandwich and cajun fries), so didn't really feel hungry. Should have eaten more for sure in a.m. (less the night before!) Also had an uneasy stomach.
Event warmup:

None.

Comments:

The trail route was ok on the first leg. I'm not used to trail running, so it hurt my time that we were in the woods.
What would you do differently?:

I probably could have run a little faster on the roads/packed dirt parts. Probably should have done a little warm up so that I didn't use the first mile going slow to warm up.
Transition 1
  • 02m 36s
Comments:

Transition went well. I did waste a bit of time changing jackets, because I didn't want to be riding with a soaked jacket. Turns out I was soaked within minutes on the bike so it was really unnecessary. OTher than that I thought it was pretty quick.
What would you do differently?:

not change jackets

Comments:

Wow, this SUCKED. First, within the first mile I was soaked, especially my feet. They then proceeded to become numb with cold as the wind from riding and the gusting wind blew threw them. I could have used a thicker jacket/waterproof jacket, but I don't have a good one that isn't really loose. The road conditions were actually ok and I never got into trouble with slipperiness. But the headwind was brutal and it took so much more enrgy than this course would normally require. When we hit the coast, the wind really picked up, as did the rain. It was pouring and gusting. At one point it was all I could do to keep a decent pace (~14-15 mph) on very flat road. That part of the ride took so much out of me, and mentally I was just so fed up with the cold wind and rain, I just wanted to get off the freaking bike. So, it realy sucked.
What would you do differently?:

Warmer jacket, for sure. BUt really it was just the rain and wind that made this a crap ride, nothing I can do about that.
Transition 2
  • 04m
Comments:

Almost went for a run with my helmet on! THen started running the wrong way! My feet were so cold and numb from the bike, it was almost impossible to get my shoes on and off without falling over. It was a short run from dismount to rack, which was nice. THen you had to run around all the bikes to get to the next timing pad.
What would you do differently?:

just need a better routine. Helmet first. Shoes next. Use bike for balance if needed. I was just so wet and cold and tired and discombobulated that it was a rougher transition

Comments:

Well, as I suspected, the trail part of the course was a mess the second time through. I was very concerned about slipped or twisting an ankle, so, cleary from the above times, I went way slower than normal on the trail. I've never been so happy to run on a road. I tried to really push it on the final stretch of road, definitely accomplished that.
What would you do differently?:

not run a trail race? lol. I really did the best I could on this.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

the weather - rain and wind on the bike, slippery and muddy trails on the run. I was really excited to race this and get a great time, but that just didn't happen. I'll try it again next year, because I do really like the course

Great job on the duathlon!  Sounds like the conditions were very tough.  I hate biking in wind too.   You should be proud girl!!

Great job, Brie.  Sounds like extremely tough conditions and you stuck it out.  Couldn't have gotten a PR if you didn't finish!!

Way to go, Brie. That sounds like one tough course and an even tougher racer. Great job!
