Subject: Bent derailleaur hanger Why?

I rode today and had a mechanical failure.  I was in the middle of the cassette when I heard a clicking from the rear wheel for a couple of seconds.  Immediately my pedals locked down and threw the chain and me.  I was doing 10 mph at a cadence of about 92 on the small chain ring and the middle of the cassette going up a small grade.  Sram Red on a Tarmac road bike if this detail helps.

Picked myself off the asphalt to examine the damage.  The rear derailleaur was entwined in the spokes which must of have stopped the wheel dumping me to the road.  I rode home in the big chain ring and the smallest gear to keep the derailleur out of the spokes. As you might imagine the wheel is not exactly straight now. LBS said the hanger was bent but the derailleaur is fine.  I did not hit or bump anything and had already ridden about 40 miles without trouble. LBS said I had to have hit something to bend the hanger that far.  Anyone have an idea what might have caused this? Thanks.

Where do you store your ride, how do you transport it?

I use a bike rack on the back of my truck to transport it.  No new marks or dents on my tailagate.  I lean the bike up against a wall in my office.  No marks on the wall or the floor from it falling.  Bike rode well for 40 miles.  I on the other hand did a lot of huffing and puffing. Got to laugh at myself.

Bet you the derailleur hanger got bent when the derailleur went into the wheel...

tkos - 2012-06-04 8:38 AM Your chain likely just jumped off slightly, throwing the rear derailleur haywire and into the wheel. The hanger is supposed to do that to protect your expensive frame from damage. Happened to me last year as a chain link broke. In my case it also blew out the RD as well. A Hanger is pretty cheap so you got off lucky I guess.

My guess as well.  The bent hangar is a product of the main issue that caused the chain to jump off.

I've twice had destroyed rear derailleurs on an otherwise smooth, clean-seeming road.

First time was when a rock was thrown off the front tire, bounced off the right crankarm, and then went right where the chain was going into the rear derailleur. What are the chances? Anyway, it just wrapped the rear derailleur over the cluster and sideways into the spokes, and bent the hanger. This was before the days of replaceable hangers, and I thought the frame was toast. Fortunately, it's steel, and a shop straightened it out good as new.

Second time was when a bolt on the lower jockey wheel came loose, and the chain got sucked into the spokes. At least this time the 1/4" thick titanium dropout didn't bend, but the derailleur didn't fare so well. Oh well.

Get that piece replaced. I'd be a bit suspicious of the derailleur, though.

Cali 70.3 halfway thru the bike I was cruising at 20 plus, and during a shift my derailer bound and literally ripped off my bike. I was riding a Trek and the derailer is pressed into the frame, so there was no repairing it. Support showed up, cut my chain and put me back together as a single speed.

Turns out a worn chain was the culprit.

Depending on the trek model it can be repaired relatively quickly by sending the frame back to trek. I have a pressed in (non replaceable) hanger on a carbon frame that bent. $210 and trek put in a new one, better than a few thousand for a new frame.
