Sunny
Total Time = 1h 13m 16s
Overall Rank = 31/455
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 5/34
Pre-race routine:

Nutrition: granola bars (3 1/2 hours prior), pop tarts (2 hours prior), package of Sports beans ( 30 minutes) before swim time. Drank water during this time.
Event warmup:

20 minute warm up run with 5X100 meter strides mixed in after 10 minutes.
Planned on getting in some swim time but didn't work out
Swim
  • 16m 43s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 02s / 100 yards
Comments:

First leg of course was choppy, was not used to bobbing up and down and had waves crashing over my head every other breath. Sighting skills were poor and went way off course, past the first buoy, I went off course again but realized I could sight the small buoys when breathing to my left. About mid-way between first and second buoy things feel into place and I really started moving.
What would you do differently?:

make sure sighting is better from the start and start closer to the inside buoy. Also make sure I get some warm-up swim time.
Transition 1
  • 01m 16s
Comments:

had a bit of issue getting shoes on and clips locked.
What would you do differently?:

maybe leave shoe clips started and then lock on the bike
Bike
  • 31m 50s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 23.43 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike felt great and I did hit it too hard, every time I got a tailwind I would go up a gear and crank it hard. The first 10 miles went great, the last 2.5 I had a head wind most of the way and had to slow down a lot due to safety concerns coming back towards transition. Dropped my average speed tremendously
What would you do differently?:

Back of a little, it was hard as it was feeling good but my legs suffered at the end.
Transition 2
  • 01m 16s
Comments:

almost ran past my rack, and when I stopped my calves cramped but only for a minute or two. This made getting my running shoes on a little difficult. I also had trouble buckling my freaking race belt and getting the Garmin off the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Need find something to help getting my shoes on, maybe a powder. I put body glide on the top of tongue and heel area but the tongue gets bunched up.
Need to practice getting the Garmin off the holder.
Run
  • 22m 13s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

The first mile was a bit rough, started out and I was under a 7min/mile pace but knew to back that off a little. Looking at my pace I was staying between, 7:40 and 7:10 most of the run. The last 3/4 of mile, I was able to pick it up but did not have a chance to look at my watch to see pace.
What would you do differently?:

based on condition after the bike, I am very pleased with the run.
Post race
Warm down:

10 minute cool-down run/walk.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

lack of practice in open water swimming.

Event comments:

This was the first year under new race management. Would of like to see wave information and time transition opens either on their site or in the packet. Sounds a little silly but the finish line was a bit weak. just a sign next to a truck and a timer.

Good question... it was disappointing on how they reported the results.
