Pre-race routine:

Had an ensure and bowl of oatmeal for breakfast (three hours before race). Also had a powerbar about an hour before the race. Took a powergel about 15 minutes before race start.
Got a good spot in the transition area at end of row. Good to be early.

Event warmup:

Went for a short 13 minute run. Took bike out for a five minute right and clicked through all the gears. Got wetsuit on and swam five minutes. Everything felt good.
Swim
  • 37m 16s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 16s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim started out great. Current was definitely against us on the first leg. I sighted well to the first buoy. My natural drift to the right helped keep me on line to the buoy with current pushing to the left. From first buoy to second buoy went real fast! Straigh downriver. I rounded the second buoy well. I completed misnavigated the swim in to the shore. Current took me down river so far that I lost site of even the marking buoys. Rather than just pop up and get re-calibrated, I kept swimming and ended up missing exit by 200 yds downriver. I estimate it cost me 3-4 minutes to walk/swim hard up river to exit. Lesson learned!
What would you do differently?:

Watch where I'm going. If you can't see buoys, stop!
Transition 1
  • 02m 26s
Comments:

Was completely winded by end of swim. Wading in thigh high water forced me to walk through most of transition to get pulse back down. Think it was the right decision to not push too hard through transition after the end of the swim.
What would you do differently?:

swim smarter
Bike
  • 1h 20m 41s
  • 26 miles
  • 19.33 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt pretty good on the bike. Made it through some tought hills and saved some for the run. Couldn't use the aero bottle, as it didn't fit on rack in transition area. I'll have to fix that somehow. Only drank 20 ounces or so on the bike. Also only had half a pack of clif blocks on the bike. I need to get better at eating and drinking on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Just need to get better at nutrition on the bike.
Transition 2
  • 01m 54s
Comments:

Decent transition. Thought I forgot number, but it was on my back. Cost me a few seconds.

Took a powergel in transition and put two more in my shirt.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Maybe could have hurried a bit more.
Run
  • 50h 45m
  • 6.21 miles
  • 8h 10m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt surprisingly good on the run. Wasn't trying to run that fast, but after two miles realized I was feeling pretty good. Just ran a nice steady pace; didn't really push that hard. Two gels at two and four. Took water and powerade at each stop.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Went and sat in the river. Felt great!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Bad sighting on the swim; other than that I have no regrets.

Fasteset Olympic by 11 minutes!

Event comments:

Great venue for a race. Water is nice, bike is just a little challenging, and run is nice and flat. I'll do this race again.

Congrats on the PR!!

That current was brutal. Before the race, I thought there were two buoys between the last corner and the exit, but I couldn't find them. I sighted towards the orange pylon warning boaters of the piles - as the current pushed me downstream, I was aiming more and more directly upstream. A kayaker finally came up to me and told me I wasn't going anywhere, so I turned directly to shore.

That walk through the water really wore me out for the rest of the race.

My Garmin download showed that I swam in place for about 10 minutes, and my walk upstream was about 8. Last year's swim was about 32 minutes, but this year's was about 54!
