Regular 127 Ankeny | Subject: Trinona I'm very excited about racing in the Trinona Triathlon this Sunday. It will be my second Tri, and first Olympic Distance. However I have a couple of questions for those who have run/volunteered for the race before. 1. How far is the swim exit to T1 entrance? 2. How well is the Bike course marked? I'm concerned about coming off the bluff and missing the turn into the college. 3. How are the aid stations laid out on the run; Are there any on the bike? 4. Any advice for how to tackle Garvin Heights? Thanks for the info, see you on Sunday! |

Not far - maybe 25 yards maybe. 2. How well is the Bike course marked? I'm concerned about coming off the bluff and missing the turn into the college. Well marked. They have a handful of people ready to wave you over into the hard right-had turn as you scream down the other side of the bluff. 3. How are the aid stations laid out on the run; Are there any on the bike? Run - Yes. about every 1.5 miles. Bike - Yes. My year, they had one about 1 mile past the top of Garvin Heights. 4. Any advice for how to tackle Garvin Heights? Grow Wings? Nah. Unless you plan on winning their 'race within a race', just shift into a large cog and spin your way up. If it's your first Oly, you don't want to have dead legs half-way through the bike. Don't worry. You'll be fine. Thanks for the info, see you on Sunday! This is a GREAT little race. Enjoy! |

Expert 1091 St. Paul, MN | Subject: RE: Trinona Thanks for these answers Farlig! I'm doing Trinona for the first time, and I've been trying to get a better sense for the race. For some reason, I thought the "big hill" was pretty early on in the bike, but I just learned it's about half way through. Should be a fun race! (I hope!!) |

For some reason, I thought the "big hill" was pretty early on in the bike, but I just learned it's about half way through. Should be a fun race! (I hope!!) Yep, there's a little out-and-back that you have to do before heading up the hill at around mile 10-11 (so just before half-way). There are zero hills to speak of on the run, and the path is, for the most part, fairly well shaded. Which should lend itself to some speedy run splits. The transition area is nice and compact in the parking lot next to the Pavillion and only about 50-75 feet from the shore. Don't let the locals freak you out when it comes the 'ick-factor' of swimming in Lake Winona. It's really not that bad. But, do yourself a favor and don't look for it on Google Earth. I had a hard time differentiating between the green grass and the also as green water. |

Veteran 271 St. Paul, MN | Subject: RE: Trinona I'll be there for the Oly, my second of the weekend. I bet the lake isn't any worse than the Nokomis or any other metro lake not called Square that we swim in. I've been told that there is always a head wind after the ascent of Garvin, lasts about 3.5 miles IIRC |

I'm all about the heat. The wind, however, is not a friend. Unless it will push me up that hill. Then we'll talk. |

Veteran 207 Rochester, MN | Subject: RE: Trinona A message from the Head USAT Ref for this year's Trinona Race...be fair, be courteous, thank a volunteer, wear your helmet, be careful on that hill, be careful in the heat, listen to your body. Oh yes, don't draft, stay to the right, and no headphones, IPods, or IPhones out there. Read up on the USAT Rules, review the Course Maps, make sure you know your wave number, don't forget your timing chip. Just a few words. Lastly, have fun, its a triathlon after all. See you all soon! Bill I don't see anything about iPads.... I'm totally going to strap my wife's iPad to my back with duct tape and blare some tunes up that hill. |

Subject: RE: Trinona I work right across the park from the lake, I could go dip my toes in, but I don't have a thermometer. The weed situation looks fine. The swim portion has been marked for over a week and there were a few people out there swimming on Monday. As for the hill....here is a breakdown of it http://ridewithgps.com/routes/1246779 |

Subject: RE: Trinona I only mapped the hill. The rest of the course isn't that big of a deal. The downhill is very generous and it is actually a fast course. I have a 39/53 on the front and a 12-27 on the back and I think I've typically had 2 or 3 gears to spare as I've ridden up. It's challenging, but manageable. |

Veteran 207 Rochester, MN | Subject: RE: Trinona Hello, I am going to assume the temp is around 69 or 70 degrees. I base that on measuring water temp last week in a nearby lake. I will be taking the official water temperature for the Trinona Event in the afternoon on Saturday. I will post the official temperature at packet pickup and will try to post it on here. Should be wetsuit legal if that is why you are asking. I did the New Bri Tri last Saturday and the water was perfect, around 69 degrees or so. You should have good temps to swim in this weekend. All the best, Bill Nevala USAT Official |

Look forwards to seeing you there! Oh, and on this note, someone tweeted me that the lake should be around 71 on Sunday. I don't know where he gets his info, but that's just what I was told. Veteran 271 St. Paul, MN | Subject: RE: Trinona A couple things I remember about riding the bike course... When crossing Highway 43 on the out and back section, the road is a huge bump, be ready and out of your aero bars especially on the way out as you'll be coming down a slight hill. After the big descent, you'll make a right into a park area then a left onto a bike path and across two bridges, the second has a pretty big bump back down to the level of the street. There is one more tight turn in the residential neighborhood, there's an easy left followed quickly by a 90* right, I think I was moving too fast the one time I rode this course.
