Maybe its the combination of the Mt Mist 50k Ultra, the early season 70.3 in Charleston, and the Triple T, but I am feeling pretty wore out. The 100 miles to nowhere didn't help even though I felt fine during. Or it could just be a cold?

Regardless, it got me to thinking about what I have said in past years that, despite all of the races, the summer in Ga makes a better "offseason" than the winter. I feel like its time to settle back down and regroup. Anybody else think that Summer is the offseason in Ga.?

I'm not allowed to think of summer as the off season especially with the mileage you have me doing Phat lol

You Yankees just can't deal with the heat.

Maybe not the offseason per se but the "short season" for sure. If you are racing sprints and olympics you should generally be done before the heat of the day sets in and it gets ridiculously hot.

I have become tired of training in the heat in years past for late summer races like IMLou and IMWI.  Long days @ 90+ degrees suck the joy right out of this hobby of ours.

This year I start tapering in about 5 weeks and it hasn't gotten brutally hot yet, so hopefully it will be more enjoyable.

Phatnot- it sounds like you are burned out and need some planless training.  That's what I do in the winter and it seems to help.  or maybe you just need a goal/race on the horizon that motivates you.

I agree 100%.  I really want to do the Great Floridian race after hearing so much about it.  however, I am scared to death of training at that volume in july and august down here.  There are so many great races I would like to do in sept, oct, nov (140.6) that I just do not know if I am man enough to train for.  With that said I really do think the heat and humidity is our "altitude " training if you train here and race in a cool/dry state.  No way that our system does not incur extra stress that is suddenly removed when you step into a dry cooler environment (CDA is a classic example).  I hope that the training stress idea is correct.  All of you experts do not negate my idea please it is the only positive I know of for heat trainiing.

I found training for B2B in early November a lot easier, but I'm in the Atlanta area.  The second half of September and October are manageable for me.  Peak volume in July/August wasn't.

Not me!  I see the summer as mid-racing season.  Though the races shorten up due to the heat, I enjoy this part of the season. And while I train through the winter, I use that time of the year to experiment and enjoy the lack of structure.  If I want to go out and ride 4 hours, then I do that.  If I want to run a 10K, I can do that too.  I have refined my year like this:

Nov-Feb (off season) I self-coach during this time

Mar-Oct (race season) coached

+1 sounds like you need to take a break Phat.  You're usually SO positive.  Step away for a week or two and you'll get your head back in the game.

Re: summer as offseason... I never thought of it that way.  This is a good idea.  I could incorporate this into a revised 2012/2013 plan.  I can basically reduce my July & August training to maintenance runs, fun bike rides, and going to the pool with the kids.  Start anew in September, with my "first" race in October, race an early December Half Mary... suddenly that Key West race in January sounds like a fit... and then begin an earlier than usual spring build to Charleston 70.3 or Gulf Coast.  I like it.

First, there is no off season.   Second, when the sprint and OLY races are moved back to start at 7 AM, you can't complain about the heat during the races.  If you consider long as the only kind of "real" racing, then yes, summer can make a HIM or IM very hard.   Lastly, I think the summer as off season has less to do with racing in the heat and more to do with training in the heat.  On this point, I would agree with exceptions.  You can run early before the heat really kicks in (it is still hard in the really hot part no matter what).  You can do some time on the trainer to lessen the outside bike time.   Does it really matter what the weather is when you are swimming at an indoor pool?

But you know this all has me thinking that maybe a summer "short break" might be a good thing for all of us.  Not sitting on the couch and eating potato chips, but a 7-10 day reduction in volume and intensity.  It would have to be planned according to your A and B races, but a mid-season break might just be a good way to re-charge the batteries for later season racing.  Honestly, I feel pretty banged up right now too.  And I still have IMLOU in front of me!

Phat, you are right. This may not be the best week for me to be talking about taking time off... The way I ran at Macon does have me bang up quite a bit.  I have been keeping my training light this week, but will be ending the week with 4500 in the pool Saturday,  and a 100 mile ride/ 6 mile run on Sunday.  The beat goes on I am afraid....
