Okay so I am going to brag for a minuet.

My summer school plans fell through (financial aid issues), so I quickly emailed my Accounting Professor and basically asked, “Were should I look for a short notice internship.” She – knowing I want to go into Tax, and knowing I am fond a particular company – called the people she knew there and then I got an email from them. Keep in mind; this is a company that does not do internships. They informed me that they would look at the possibility of creating an internship for me. A week or two later, I get invited to an interview. The interview was in 3 sections (all levels of people), and took about 3 hours. After the interview I was amazed at this organization, a small company with clients that you only get in a big 4 firm, and they have a very unique approach to their clients. To sum, it up, they are my dream tax company!! So today I got the phone call, I GOT THE INTERNSHIP! I am so STOKED!! I am going to learn so much (more then any of my class mates with internships with the any of the “Big Four”).

Okay brag over…. I just had to tell anyone who would listen!!

So who did you tell?

Just kidding.  Congrats.  We know how much you were stressing over the interview and you've been anxiously waiting for the call.  Good luck, watch out for backstabbers and brown nosers, and uh, spell well?  Oh wait, it's accounting, you don't have to be able to spell.

Have fun!

How long is a basic minuet? I always thought they last a couple bars at least.....

You want to study TAXES?!?! Thank God for sick freaks like you....

But doesn't that generally limit you to a short window of work? (Kidding, I know better)

Why would he have a short window at work? Do Tax Accountants throw themselves out windows? Congrats Tyrant, I hope this won't interupt your drunk postings on BT.

Congratulations!  I know you were stressed about what you were going to do this summer.  Definitely make lots of friends - internships always seem to turn into jobs if the people like you.  Don't spend too much time on BT until they make you an offer.

So you brag and now you expect somebody to compose you a minuet? You know Mozart composed his first when he was just 5 years old.

Anyhow, congrats on the internship!

As long as he doesn't go on for a concerto like some people.

And you why no one plays Mozarts early music? Because it's really really bad.

I wouldn't mind hearing a good dirge though. Don't hear many of those anymore.

Congrats Tyrant. I can say from experience that the jobs you have while you're in school can make all the difference for you. This is a big opportunity. Run with it!

Congrats!!  You'll really learn a lot more in a smaller organization - you'll get to see more aspects of how the entire business works instead of just one little piece - it will be a great experience to be sure.

Congrats.

Let me offer some advice (having done the summer clerkship bit during law school):
1. Don't screw up.
2. When you screw up (and you will because you really don't know what you're doing--and shouldn't at this point), admit the mistake, apologize (usully it isn't a big deal), and ask questions regarding what you should have done.
3. Double and tripple check your work and emails for spelling, punctuation, gramar, etc.
4. Think long and hard before pressing send on any joking, funny, etc. email. The safest course is not to send it.
5. Accept every invitation to lunch, drinks after work, dinner, etc. Part of the process from the firm's side is seeing what you're like in non-office environments.
6. At any meal, order something that can be eaten in small bites and is not messy. Generally avoid pasta (usually too messy).
7. Do NOT get tipsy, drunk, or even slightly happy.
8. There are no private conversations with anyone associated with the firm. You will probably be assigned a "mentor" or "buddy." This person is NOT your friend and is not there to listen to what you dislike about the firm or its staff. Save the rants for the girlfriend.
9. Double check the "to" line in your emails to make sure you are emailing the right people.
10. Do not use the firm email to email your buddies. Keep that traffic on your personal email.
11. Unless you are explicitly instructed otherwise, wear a suit and tie your first day. If you show up and everyone else is casual, no sweat. If you show up casual and everyone else is business, BAD.

Think of the internship as (1) a very long interview; and (2) and opporutintiy to (a) learn; (b) figure out if you want to work for this firm; and (c) make contacts in the field.

I'm not trying to scare you--summer clerkships are great and a lot of fun. That said, this is your chance to make a lasting impression--make it a good one.

Good luck.

Bill
