Pre-race routine:

Showed up about 10 min after transition opened and snagged a pretty good spot at the end of my row.
Event warmup:

Decided to ride the bike a bit and I'm glad I did. My chain was slipping and I had to have the derailleur adjusted. I usually don't warmup on the bike so this was a bit of luck. The problem must've popped up on Thursday when I fixed a flat. Crisis averted.
Swim
  • 15m 49s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 48s / 100 yards
Comments:

Average swim. Nothing remarkable. Oh, except that I forgot to put my goggles on. That's right. I left them on my forehead when I dove in. Luckily, the water was very shallow for about 25 yards so I was able to pop back on to my feet and do what I should've done before I was in the water. Oops.

Other than putting on my goggles another takeaway from this race is that I should work on my bilateral breathing more. I'm not uncomfortable breathing to my left I just prefer my right. After the last turn the sun was low on the horizon to the right and shining directly into my eyes. I tried going to the left but despite the sun still felt better breathing to the right. I doubt it cost me any time, though.

Oh and I'm not sure where they measured the water temp but they declared this swim wetsuit legal at 74 degrees. I left the suit at home like a lot people did, I assume. Only a few people had them on.
What would you do differently?:

I can't believe I'm going to say this: put my goggles on.
Transition 1
  • 00m 44s
Comments:

I haven't practiced mounting my bike with shoes already clipped in enough to feel proficient at it so I decided to put them on before mounting like usual. Pretty sure my T1 was faster than some in my AG b/c they wore wetsuits.
What would you do differently?:

More practice with shoes already clipped in.
Bike
  • 1h 10m 20s
  • 24.5 miles
  • 20.90 mile/hr
Comments:

I'm not the fastest cyclist right now. Last year I averaged 22+ at this race and this year came in under 21. That's testament to how little I've trained on the bike this year (which included zero riding over the winter).
What would you do differently?:

More time in the saddle? Better time in the saddle? Both.
Transition 2
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

Average. I almost went sockless but opted not to. I probably would've been ok without them but they did cost me time.

Overall I was beat by a guy in my AG by :02. And I fumbled with my socks for a lot longer than that.
What would you do differently?:

More time training without socks.
Run
  • 40m 43s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 06m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

Great run. I felt light and smooth most of the time. My cadence was good, breathing was good, nothing felt overly labored. Towards the end my quads started to seize up a bit but luckily they never did completely cramp.

I negative split the course but just barely. I have to assume the cooler temps helped a bit. Last year this run was hot and much slower.
What would you do differently?:

Train sockless more.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretch, hydrate, eat. Mary volunteered so I took my time eating and puting my things away until she was done at her water station. Best volunteer hands down!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of transition and bike training. However, I still beat last year's time handily.

Successful race? Yeah, I think so.

Event comments:

Great race once again. Moving the start of the run course to the multi-use trail by the reservoir was nice.
