I have an 11 y/o doing kid's tri's. She's interested in using clipless pedals. Are there age-based rules on this? Any thoughts on this? Have any of you had kids who tried or currently use them?

I got my daughter using clip in pedals at 13.  She fell two times getting used to them, one she skinned her knee pretty good.  However, she has done really well since then and she can handle them like a pro now.  She much prefers it to riding not clipped in.

I started using clipless at age 13. No major falls-always was able to catch myself. But everyones different.

If it was a boy I would say no because you will go broke on shoes!

Just take the time to learn and get confident! Do one foot at a time so she has a foot to catch herself.

We strap kids into skis much younger then 11. And if she wants to try them she is probably ready.

That's why I am seriously considering it. I wouldn't have pushed it. Good point about the changing sizes with growth.

Hey Scott! You may want to check but it was my understanding beginning this year tri bikes, aero helmets ad clipless pedals are no longer allowed in kids tris. She could use them in adult races but not kids tris. Something to look into.

My 7 year old wanted to be able to clip in on her bike while doing training video's (Sufferfest and Spinervals), but I was unsure about her being clipped in during an event. I bought her some of the double sided pedals that allow her to clip in on one side and use the platform on the other side. She utilizes her bike shoes and clips in while on the trainer, but uses the platforms with her running shoes when we do a tri (also makes transitions easier/quicker for now).

As far as shoes, I had no problem finding her shoes online for $25-30.

Once she gets a little older and is interested in working on clipping in outside, we'll transition her by having her clip in on one side at a time.

My son started use clippers pedals when he was 6. Its very common in BMX. Downside to him using them in tri's is that he is usually the only one so his transition time is much slower. While he usually crushes the bike leg the transition time kills him and ad's to the pressure. He's stubborn as hell so he insists on using them, because he can. I haven't heard anything about the rule change but it's something I'll have to check into.
