Subject: Help! Aerobar arm rest screw sheared... Race next weekend!
I was on a training ride yestarday, and about half-way through the ride, I heard a pop, and realized that one of the screws holding arm rest to the aerobars had sheared off. I was using a Vision C spacer/riser kit - http://3-athlon.com/product.php?productid=482to raise the bars a bit. Not sure how to fix this - the bolt/screw sheared completely... Any help???

By shear do you mean a screw came out or it broke part way out?  The threads get stripped?  Screw head broke off?

Screw head broke off.... the base of the screw is still in the aerobar, broken off completely flush with the surface of the bar, if that makes sense....

Dremel with a cutoff wheel. Notch a slot in the screw that you can see and take it out with a flathead screwdriver.

Or drill the screw and something like this:

I would get a drill bit and drill out the screw thats stuck in there. They sell special bits designed for this. Just make sure its smaller diamiter than the screw itself so you don't tear the threads up. Then while you are at your local hardware shop find yourself a new screw that will work/ fit in there. Ask for help if you can't find one yourself. Chances are if you bring in a good screw they can find one that will be pretty close. Good luck friend!

This seems to be a problem for Vision.  You're the third person (including me) I've heard this happened to.

My bike shop tried to dremel the screw out for me but it failed.  I had to send my bars back in to Vision (through the bike shop) to get warrantied out.  Mine were less than a year old.  I can't remember how long the warranty is.

I realize that doesn't help you out...but maybe if you have a big enough LBS they can just give you another set and replace their stock with the one that comes back via warranty?

Truly stinks that an entire aerobar system gets ruined by one broken screw.  Especially with integrated bars...stinks....

I'm the other one of which Jen speaks, which reminds me, my issue has yet to be resolved with my LBS. They still owe me aerobars.

This happened to me as well.  I tried to back drill the original bolt out but it would not work.  I then tried to remove the damaged screw completely.   I was able to drill it out, but, after I did realized that I went straight down on the bar and the screw was at an angle.    I rigged something up but it only lasted a couple of rides.  I ended up with a new set of bars, which completely frustrated me as it was all due to a 25 cent screw.

Good luck and watch the alignment.

There is a tool that has a left wind, which is especially fur the problem you have.

Ask for it at HomeDepot or Harbor Freight.

Look at this:

And....

It happened to me AGAIN.

I will NEVER EVER EVER EVER IN MY LIFE OWN ANOTHER SET OF VISION BARS.  EVER.

Sunday on my ride I was moving my hands around going up a hill and suddenly felt/heard a "click".  Aerobar pad started shifting forward and back a bit and I knew exactly what happened.

I cried a bit.  Seriously.  If there is anything more frustrating than this happening...it's it happening TWICE inside a year.

I took the bike to the local shop.  They are going to try calling FSA for me tomorrow.  It should be warrantied since these are only about 8-9 months old.  But when they send me a new set I will be selling them.  Not using them.  I'm in the market for a different brand of aero bar.

Oh, and I have a half ironman in 6 days....NOT a happy camper.  Once they are warrantied out Vision is getting a major nasty-gram from me.

I know this is an old thread but I just had this happen so I'm sure it is an ongoing issue. I was able to unscrew the broken half by spraying some wd40 waiting a few minutes and using a giant pair of pliers. I first tried needle nose, then a regular paid with no luck. Then I broke out a huge pair and it came right out. Hope that helps somebody.
