Pre-race routine:

So Cindy and I decided that no hotel for this one. So I packed all I could the night before and got up at 4 to get going. PB sammich down the shoot, brew some coffee and load up the rest of my junk (ie a backpack and water). My friend Robynne lives just down the road so she loaded all her stuff into the Expedition and we were off by 5 AM for the hour long drive across town.
Event warmup:

Swam about 250 and got a short jog in. Swim felt so so and the run felt good.
Swim
  • 22m 57s
  • 1000 meters
  • 02m 18s / 100 meters
Comments:

Swim felt OKish, but the time would tell you otherwise. Somewhat congested at the start, but aren't they all. No excuses really. I really need to figure out why my swim training isn't translating to race day.
What would you do differently?:

More OWS practice I guess. Arghhhhhhhhhhh
Transition 1
  • 01m 15s
Comments:

Uneventful T1. Pretty smooth
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 47m 32s
  • 18.64 miles
  • 23.53 mile/hr
Comments:

I had the course coming up a bit shorter than this and time on my Garmin was a bit quicker but that's splitting hairs. This was the best feeling bike leg yet. Kept my HR in check and felt like I could have gone a bit harder when I got off. Pretty much just put my head down and went. This was my first race where I just diluted my nutrition (Cherry Lime Roctane) into my water bottle. Works like a charm.
What would you do differently?:

Go a bit harder.
Transition 2
  • 01m 6s
Comments:

Made a boo boo here. I race with just a 305. I pull it off the bike mount in T2. Well I dropped my race number and my sunglasses and all of a sudden forgot to grab the stupid Garmin. Wasn't until I was half a mile out of T2 I noticed I didn't have it.
What would you do differently?:

Grab my Garmin
Run
  • 38m 13s
  • 4.97 miles
  • 07m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

I've become so accustomed to knowing my real time pace and HR that I felt somewhat lost on this run. I should have been running 7:15s and I wasn't. I knew I was a little slow but not that slow. Plus I thought the heat would get me a bit more. I had way too much juice the last mile. I should have been hurting more.
What would you do differently?:

Remember my Garmin and push, push, push.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed some Muscle Milk, checked the results, and visited with some friends. Hit the trainer for an hour plus at home to spin out the legs.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

More time in open water and limit stupid mistakes.

Event comments:

I really like this race. It's small, fun, and well organized. I will come back and do this one year after year.

Thanks man.  It was a solid race and life is sooo much easier on the bike.  It's also nice to have someone putting together structured bike workouts for me.  Now to start pushing some thresholds on foot next time out.
