I'm in my second year, and have four local tri's on the calendar.  For you folks that are WAY into it, how far do you travel to do triathlons in a given year...?

My furthest has been to Kona, HI but was combined with a family vacation. However, I find the destination races much more rewarding and motivating than the local races.

I'm just in my first season and have only done three races so far, but I have yet to travel less than a three hour drive and have gone as far as 5-1/2 hours away.

I'm in Ohio and have raced here and Kentucky.
If I can stick to my plans for the rest of the year (e.g. stay healthy), I'll be adding Georgia and either Florida or Texas to that list.

As far as I possibly can.  I'll be in Alaska next week for a marathon and Europe is on the calendar for next year and an IM.

My son is 14....he was in Kansas City, then Dallas, will be in Seattle this week, then St. Louis, then Des Moines, then Cincinatti, then Des Moines again.  I try to find a race (sprint or Oly) wherever his races are in the same weekend, and that works out well.  I'll miss Seattle......just too expensive for both of us to make it.

I live in Central Texas and there are plenty of races here.  Last year, my wife and I did the Nation's Tri in Washington D.C. and it was great (but expensive).  I can envision a destination race every couple years, but not on a regular basis.

Same here, Central TX.  I think we have travelled around the state enough, but not out of state yet.  If my husband qualifies for Western States, then we will travel for that, but with 3 kids, it has to be a vacation for us all!

I don't drive more than 1.5 hrs and have plenty of options nearby. While destination running races are appealing because all I really need are my running shoes, I don't feel the same about tri's as I have no desire to lug along my bike for a vacation.

Anything within a 10 hour drive of St Louis. (and I drive fast)  Oh, I am considering the Jamaica Tri, which will be a bit further. But that will be a Tri-cation.

I'm in Central Texas, and we do have plenty of races around here, but I like to see and experience some new places, and not the same ol' same ol' all the time.

I've raced in:

Texas

Louisiana

New York

Colorado

Wisconsin

Florida

California

Alaska

South Dakota

Kansas

Oregon

Idaho

and in Canada, Mexico, Austria, and St. Croix

Heading to New England to do a few races this summer.

I live in southern CA and have only raced tri's out of state twice over the past five years:

--Drove to IM St George in 2010 (which was closer than a couple races I've done in California, actually)

--Flew to NH for me and my wife to race Timberman 70.3 last summer.

Definitely won't do a two-bikes-and-a-plane-trip race again...brutally expensive for us.  DW wanted to do Hawaii 70.3, but after seeing what we spent on the Timberman trip, I think she gets that it ain't happening on our income.

Most of our destination races have been running events--Boston Marathon, Bay to Breakers a few times.  Talking about doing one or more of the running events at Disney World sometime soon-ish.

If you count swimming, a bunch of U.S. states, and countries on four continents.

If you count running, four U.S. states and Italy.

For triathlon I traveled between the U.S. and Indonesia (7000-10,000 miles), combined with family/friend/home visits, and last was from Indonesia to Melbourne (~3300 miles).

Since there are rarely races in Vietnam, I usually travel to Singapore to race. It's a short flight (about two hours) and I can get tickets pretty cheaply, but it's still an international exit/entry, and four stamps in the passport. Result--I had to get extra pages added after only two years. Most of the stamped-up pages were Vietnam and Singapore entry/exit stamps, also visas for a tri in Indonesia (full page for a 24-hour visit), and three half-marathons in Cambodia. The only non-sports related stamp was for two vacations in Laos. I do race at home sometimes but don't consider that traveling to race, since visiting family is the primary reason for the trip!

Triathlon season in Melbourne has at least 10 races on the calendar within about 10km of home!  BUT have travelled to Queensland, South Australia and NSW so far and maybe get to Western Australia and New Zealand one day.  There is a slim chance I'll do the Great Wall of china marathon next year...would love to.

Once you are on a plane might as well get your money's worth. Raced in South Africa, Holland, Switzerland, Belgium, Australia, US, Thailand and this summer Spain. On the horizon - Mauritius and Abu Dhabi.

We drove from Illinois to Idaho for IMCdA in 2009 (and my training in the year leading up to the race covered the round trip distance).  My wife and I flew to San Francisco (from Illinois) last year so I could do Vineman.  I've gone to Pittsburgh and Cincinnati for marathons.

I did an open water swim near Brisbane (but I was already in Brisbane on business).  I'm looking at doing Comrades Marathon (South Africa) next year.

I live in Maryland and I have done all my Triathlons and running races in Maryland (we have alot to choose from) and Delaware. This year I will be doing a Tri in DC and next year I will be going to PA to do IM Pocono 70.3. I would love to travel everywhere for races but money is the biggest issue for me because I dont make alot. Usually I will stick within driving distance so anything within a 10hr drive for me unless I make it to an IM one day then I will go anywhere.

Most of the racing is pretty local but we have gone pretty far ... we live in Toronto

-  Marine Corps Marathon in DC - for me

-  Ironman Canada in BC - for DH

-  we spectated IMWC in Kona as part of honeymoon - two great things - tropical vacation and triathlon

- We are both signed up for IM Mont Tremblant which is relatively close for us but will still be 6+ hour drive - but like someone else said flying with bike boxes isn't very appealing.

We have made Muskoka 70.3 a sort of destination for several years - it's just over 2 hours away but it is at a nice resort and being the goal race we spend the money stay over for a few nights.

From Wisconsin and generally do all the local races.  I've gone to MN, IL, California and Flordia.  Would like to add St. Croix and Brazil to my list as well.

I look at it as a mini vacation, especially south beach

My rule of thumb: I'll only drive as long one-way as it should take to finish the race.

The longer the race, the further I'll drive.
