Subject: 50 mile race 3 months before marathon "A" race

I am about a month removed from my second IMTX race.  Last year was 10:42 and this year was 10:59 with a 4:05 and 4:12 marathon.  I have a decent base coming out of my IM training so it should not be to hard to get back consitently into the 30-35 MPW range.  I have a marathon the first week of march that I would like to BQ, but a 50 mile race close to home in Huntsville, Tx looks tempting on Dec 1st.  What is the recovery from a 50 Mile race and would it hurt me to do if I want to BQ in March?  My Mary PR is 3:23 and that was 4 years ago a few months after training for my first HIM.

My logs are missing the last 2 weeks.

I say do it.

With a solid base, and a couple of years worth of running in the legs, 3 months is plenty of time for recovery and a good built towards March. Just be willing to go easy for the first 2-3 weeks after the 50-miler.

IMO, a 50-mile trail run (~9 hr finish) is the equivalent of a BQ Marathon in terms of effort and hurt, and I've done both.

BTW, what do you need to run to BQ? Plus you'll want to be at least 5 minutes faster than that just to increase your chances of getting registered.

I do a yearly 50k 3 months out of my yearly marathon. It really puts a kink in a 18 week marathon training plan, very difficult to hit quality workouts 2 weeks out of the 50k, for me. Or sometimes I do, like get some quality in the week or 2 after, then I get sick and break down maybe 2-4 weeks after the 50k. So still working on how to do it myself. Of course, you also have the lead up to the 50k which you need to hit some longer runs, which screws up the training leading up to the 50k.

And you are talking a 50 miler.

I think 2 to 3 weeks of recovery after a 50 miler would be good. Go with the 3 probably. Then a nice 6-8 week build/peak to the marathon and a good taper. Think that is what I will do next year.
