I just took a quick look at the course. Interesting configuration with 2 1/3 loops on the bike but a single loop (out/back) on the run. What I really don't like is it has one of those stupid CdA-style swims with two loops. It looks like you have to exit the water after the first one. Really? Isn't Tahoe big enough to allow for a one loop swim? Still, it looks might enticing ...

My wife and I were going to elope there - until my MIL caught wind of the plan.

Tahoe sounds like a great destination race, but I doubt I could handle the altitude.

I think it sounds awesome! My husband did an adventure race there a number of years ago and I was amazed at how pretty it is. Now, I don't think I'll ever do an IM, but if I did this one would be a top choice. I do live at 5k feet though so I'm not considering altitude. I hate how thick air with lots of oxygen feels.

The Tahoe region will be an awesome venue for a race.

I'm sure the multi-lap bike was necessary to avoid excessive/excruciating climbs...not a lot of flat topography at the summit of the Sierras.  Elevation will definitely be a training consideration, but I love that we'll have an IM event within a couple hours of home!

Can't wait for the first event!!!

(ETA) My target for my first IM event was 2014...I think I'll sign up to volunteer for the innaugural race next year for the early-registration advantage for 2014  (does WTC still do that?).

I'm as sea-level a dweller as you can find. I've also ridden three centuries around Tahoe, and did not notice an altitude effect. Wasn't exactly racing but it was hard riding. I also ran a 10-miler the day after one of those centuries without problems.

Very intrigued.  This season never got off the ground for me, so something like that next year is appealing.  Looks like they are scheduling this about a week later than I'd expect the air races to be held, too, so that should help those flying into town for the IM.

I remember the epic battles at the "World's Toughest Triathlon" back in the 1980's in that area. That race slightly different than Ironman distance and ascended Monitor Pass, a tough climb. The cold water necessitated a warming tub after leaving the swim.

I remember Scott Molina debuted a new full triathlon wetsuit there called the "3,2,1 Blaster" referring the thickness of its neoprene.

It was a cool race then, and with Ironman and WTC's excellent event production this is sure to be an absolute epic.

Scott said in a recent IM Talk Legends of Triathlon podcast it was the toughest race he ever won.

Sounds like a lot of fun actually!  Wish I could plan on that!

I did the Trans-Tahoe Relay (swim across lake Tahoe split among six people).  I came from sea level and I didn't really notice the altitude that much.  Plus we didn't get to wear wetsuits.

I imagine they are keeping the swim close to shore because Tahoe gets really deep and really cold once you get farther out into it.  When we did the relay it was over 1500' deep and about 60 degrees out in the middle (no wetsuits).  But closer to shore it was almost 65. That was in July-ish.

Edit.  That's going to be an expensive race and a bit of a PITA to get around probably.  I know for the relay we all spent a small fortune between housing, rental cars, etc.  And I do not believe there are TOO many places to stay within walking distance of Kings Beach.  Most of them are a few miles down the road.  And there is almost NO parking at Kings Beach.  So, this will probably be a bit of a logistical nightmare.  I imagine they will have to do shuttles and such.
