Subject: Garmin 910 Open Water Swim Issue
Just curious if anyone is having this issue since the firmware update. I have been in the lake three times since I updated my 910 and each time the watch loses satalite reception and quits recording everything but time swimming. Before the update this never happened, I will call Garmin on Monday. If I hit the stop button and then start again it works fine. The issue is all the time I spent swimming before that is not recorded except for the amount of time, no distance or anything else. Very frustrating.

I'm having the same problem with my Garmin 910XT. Using software version 2.40 / GPS: 200.51.

I didn't use it before in open water (used it only in indoor pools) so I don't know if this problem was there with earlier versions of the software. I was disappointed by the bad performance of the GPS in open water. If you hold the watch 10 cm under water the satellite reception is completely gone.

It loses satellite reception in every way of swimming. I also are going to report this problem to Garmin.

I just saw that there was an update to version 2.50 available. I don't see this particular problem in the fixes but will try it out this evening.

Changes made from version 2.40 to 2.50:

  • Fixed several problems causing shutdowns during biking and running activities.
  • Corrected several instantaneous pace calculation issues.
  • Major modifications and additions to Bike Power functionality:
    1. Improved support for power based workouts.
    2. Added new power metrics (Training Stress Score (TSS), Intensity Factor (IF), Normalized Power (NP), kJ).
    3. Automatically modify power zones when functional threshold power (FTP) changes.
    4. Improvements to power sensor calibration process.
    5. Added support for left right power balance.
    6. Added support for 3, 10, and 30s power smoothing.
  • Improved accuracy of distance calculations for pool swim.
  • Rest times are no longer included in the average pace calculation for pool swim.
  • Distance alerts for pool swim will now occur during the last length before completing the configured distance.
  • Swim distance alert will now reset after pressing lap button.
  • Corrected issues displaying history for open water swims.
  • Improved calorie calculations during swim mode.
  • Corrected issue with barometer calibration improving initial elevation readings.
  • Corrected issue where sudden changes in the elevation could be observed on the watch.
  • Fixed problem with auto-scroll that could potentially cause a device malfunction.
  • Added ability for the user to enter ANT+ IDs for all sensor types.
  • Added sensor details page for all ANT+ sensors.
  • Prevented HR alerts from occurring when user was in the correct zone.
  • Improved accuracy of battery charge information.
  • Improved foreign language translations.

What are you doing when it looses signal?  I saw it this weekend, have 2.5 firmware, but I wasn't swimming and was standing in water with arm at side.  I'll check my logs tonight to see if it stopped recording while swimming.  I thought my distance was a tad short, maybe .05-10ish. I did notice that the watch locked up going from swim mode to bike mode.  It would pause on bike mode for 5 minutes.  I powered off/on and same thing.  I had to reset the workout in swim mode and then was able to switch to bike mode.  Strange.

I was swimming all three times when mine quit. I talked to Garmin today and they had me try reseting the auto satilite feture. To do this be outside with the watch off, hold the down button and power button at the same time until the aquiring satilites appears on the screen. He said it may have had a corrupt satilites file. I will know tomorrow if it worked as i am doing another open water swim. He also said if that did not work to try a master reset which I will if this does not work. I am tired of master resets though because I have to reset all my screens and data and they really do not seem to work for any length of time.

The first suggestion from Garmin did not fix the issue, I guess I'll try the master reset and see what happens Thursday when I hit the lake again.

Having the same problem. I thought it was because I was swimming back and forth between buoys and I was confusing it. Had only done swims in a straight line instead of back and forth between buoys. This was the first swim since update.

Make sure you call them with the issue so they can get someone working on it. Do you have the auto scroll set up to work while swimming? I did but after my master eset I turned it off, who looks at it while swimming anyways. Hopefully either or will fix the issue, if not then another call to Garmin. I'll be back in the lake tomorrow.

Just a bump to see if anyone has discovered a fix. I cannot call Garmin again until monday evening. I have already reported it once but need to call back to say it did not fix it.

I have tried all their suggestions and it did not fix a thing. I'll be calling back on Monday myself. I do not expect them to have fix for this for a little while with another firmware update.

I've been holding off on updating the firmware because of this issue.  I have no problems now with OWS distance and that is my favorite thing about the device.

Wanted to update to improve the instant pacing for running which is now useless.  I have it set to give me splits of time and pace at each half mile and that has worked well.

I've been holding off as well due to this issue but I've started having problems with it shutting down on the bike so I guess I will have to go ahead and update.

I am still having this issue and have not been able to get back with Garmin on it yet. I have tried everything they suggested twice and it still does it eveytime I do an open water swim, which is everytime I swim. I was hoping their suggestions would fix it but no luck so I'll probably have to wait a month or longer for the next firmware update. Hopefully I'll get a chance at work tomorrow ro call them.

Mine quits as well in open water after the update.  Really happy that my $400 watch essentially does the same thing as a $2 vending machine watch would do for me in the water!

I just got off the phone with Garmin and they are going look into further. I am sending them some of my files that this has happened. If you are having the same issue you need to contact Garmin so they do not blow it off as a defective watch if in fact it is a software issue.

Has anyone who updated to 2.5 not having an issue with OWS shutdown?

I did the update but have not had the chance to do an OWS with it yet, and am wondering if there is a chance it will work fine or if this is an across the board problem.

So, I was contacted by Garmin (via email).  They are telling me to turn off auto pause.  But I don't see an auto pause setting in the swim options.  Anyone know what they are talking about?  I don't want to turn off auto pause in the bike or run settings.

Thoughts?

Anyone have any other luck.  I was told that this is a rare problem and that they are having very few people report it.  So if you see it, let them know.

Thanks.

I have auto pause turned off on mine and it still does it. Last night I went for a 2.6 mile swim in the lake and it was the same old story, everything quit working except for the time after the .26 miles. I have gotten to the point of wanting to get a refund for my watch because of the issues I have had in the last two months with it. This is also my second watch, the first one quit working a month and a half ago after I had several issues with it locking up during runs and not being able to turn it off, on or anything else. During the Cleveland marathon it quit working at about mile 10 and that was it for that watch and now this swimming issue is really getting aggrivating. It is hard to see where you can  make improvements when the only data you have is time that you were in the water.

I see Megellan has a watch out that does all three, if I can not get this one to work right I will try and have them refund my money and buy one of them, it can not be any worse that this one is. Do not get me wrong I am a fan of Garmin products and everyone up to this point has worked great for me but this is getting very frustrating, one thing after another.
