Event warmup:

Swim
  • 09m 57s
  • 547 yards
  • 01m 49s / 100 yards
Comments:

I knew drafting would help me greatly since I had done essentially zero swim training since last October. Did a good job of drafting but I think the feet I found weren't very fast.
What would you do differently?:

Should have started closer towards the front of the group and found feet to follow sooner. Probably should have spent ANY amount of time training for the swim. Haven't swam since last October.
Transition 1
  • 01m 32s
Comments:

Very hesitant to do a flying mount since I hadn't tried it since October and I was very winded/fatigued from the swim. Decided to play it safe and stop to mount instead. Probably a good decision.
What would you do differently?:

More swim training so my arms aren't so wrecked coming out of the swim. Practice a couple flying mounts before the race so I'm confident in my ability to pull it off. Probably would have saved me 10 seconds or so.
Bike
  • 36m 30s
  • 14 miles
  • 23.01 mile/hr
Comments:

I went very fast today - excellent conditions. My game plan was to survive the swim, hammer on the bike, and pour everything else out on the run. I executed well on the bike today with the second fastest bike split in my age group.
Transition 2
  • 01m 7s
Comments:

I went out the swim in instead of the run out. Oops! Luckily I was able to circle back to the run out timing mats and cross them without too much trouble. Probably cost me about 10 seconds.
What would you do differently?:

Pay more attention to the transition area flow in pre-race prep.
Run
  • 19m 53s
  • 3 miles
  • 06m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

My high cadence on the bike helped in keeping my legs moving once I got started running. It hurt pretty bad for the first 1/2 mile and the last mile. I pressed hard over the last 1/2 mile to make sure I finished strong and fended off any would-be last-minute passers.
What would you do differently?:

Do ANY kind of brick workouts prior to the race.
Post race
Warm down:

Ice cream, cheese pizza, lots of water. Caught up with the wife, kid, and some friends.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Blatant lack of focused training - especially in the swim. The swim is definitely where I lost out on 3rd place. I just couldn't make up the initial deficit on the bike and run.
