Total Time = 1h 53m 45s
Overall Rank = 221/944
Age Group = f30-34
Age Group Rank = 17/145
Pre-race routine:

Get up early and sneak out of the hotel while the kids were still asleep. Coffee and you know, potty - THANK GOD for coffee. Then board the bus while munching a banana and bagel. 30 min bus ride to the start.
Event warmup:

jogged, high knees, butt kicks and a pick up. Stretch and jum around after stripping to my running shorts and bra - it was a matter of staying warm at that point it was still cold, but I would be damned to wear more than a running bra and shorts!!
Run
  • 1h 53m 45s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

My plan was to do a 10 mile training run and a 5k race - and I think I executed it well!! Although I never felt like I was truly pushing it on the first 10 miles, the uphills were not easy... I was SHOCKED at how good my legs felt when I hit the top of the last hill around the 9.5 mile mark. Then I let loose at the 10 mile aid station and I passed people left and right. The last 1.5 miles was pretty dead flat. I got involved in an all out sprint to the finish. I was battling another woman for the last .25 mile after I passed her and she pused several times, but I put the hammer down at the end and she had no hope... My Garmin says that my pace for the last 150 yds was 5:22 min/mile and my HR was 205 for almost 30 seconds...
Comparing this to the 1st 1/2 mary I did, this was not NEARLY as tough mentally. Though it had a net elevation drop of 260', it was at altitude, yet my splits, and overall was faster and I my HR lower on average (except for the 5k race part) I was shocked that I had that 5k in me after how fast I ran the rest of the race! That was within seconds of my 5k PR. How is it that my last 5k of a 1/2 marathon could be faster than my 5k at that aquathon last week???!!!!!
What would you do differently?:

Train more - but otherwise, I planned and executed and it felt GREAT!!!
Post race
Warm down:

walk, then when Chris started coming in, I ran the last .5 mile with him (okay he was jogging...) Then we stretched

What limited your ability to perform faster:

training....

Event comments:

I am now wholeheartedly convinced that I can run a 1/2 mary after a 1.2 mile swim and 56 mile bike... :)

Running
01:53:45 | 13.1 miles | 08m 41s  min/mile
Age Group: 0/145
Overall: 0/944
Performance: Good
Laps (each mile): 8:58 min 173bpm avg 8:39 180 8:34 180 8:26 180 8:55 183 8:38 185 9:21 188 (uphill mile 1) 9:27 191 (uphill mile 2) 9:11 190 finished uphills - flat mile recovery 5k race: 8:01 192 8:11 196 8:33 198 avg (1.1 miles) so 24:45 for the 5k!!!
Course: Downhill the first 7 miles!!! After re-looking at the map, the total loss of elevation for the 1/2 marathon was only 260' (it was 2000' for the full marathon!!) so after those 7 miles, there were some hills on miles 7-10. Once you hit mile 10, it was downhill and flat for the rest of the way!

Why are you shocked?  I knew you would do well.  You are in great overall fitness!  Congrats BTW.  THe aquathon is a strange bird!  It is hard because there is no blood where you need it after being horizontal for so long!  That is why I get side aches.  Great job.

Nice run. Apparently you made the right decision by not blowing out your legs with us on a ride on Sat.!

Great job!  That's an awesome way to finish.  I didn't know any other folks from CO-BT were there, but I figured someone was...  It's good to see BT representing so well.  Congratulations on a well run race.  You'll do great at your half.

It's awesome when you feel that great after finishing, Congratulations!
I always split my marathons up similar way - 10 mile warmup, 10 mile workout, 10K race
It helps to concentrate on smaller parts at a time
Keep it up!
