Overall Rank = 199/228
Age Group = W30-39
Age Group Rank = 12/20
Pre-race routine:

alarms didn't wake me up, so we woke up late - 5:30. crock pot oatmeal experiment bombed (don't try anything new on race day!), so i had a bagel w/ peanut butter and some coffee w/ a chocolate stinger shot mixed in (a new race day favorite).
Event warmup:

got to the race later than i would have liked due to the alarm thing. once we got there, i picked up my race packet. in line for body marking, i noticed that i was registered as a 52 year old man. um. hmmmm. okay. got back over to the race packet area and they had me talk to the race director. knew him from many emails over the last year (i was registered last year, but had a wedding to attend in ohio the same weekend, so shifted my registration to this year). he said he would fix the problem :) look at this thought:

Swim
  • 30m 50s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

not bad considering i've been neglecting my swimming in a huge way since the local pool closed. outdoor pools open in two weeks and the lakes are warm, so i have no excuse. anyway, not bad considering. thought i had a bloody nose at one point after a nice kick to the face. i love co-ed waves.
What would you do differently?:

swim. not get gastroenteritis a week before this race.
Transition 1
  • 03m 38s
Comments:

first time getting out of my new wetsuit in a race. went just fine. i was not too worried about my overall time for this race given how sick i was last week. i just wanted to finish. so, i took it easy in transitions and chatted with folks, took my time, etc.
Bike
  • 1h 24m 46s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 17.59 mile/hr
Comments:

it was a wonderful course. not too hilly, not too flat. my only complaint was the headwind. when it was to the side, or better yet, a tail wind, it was fine...but the headwind was brutal. i have sunburn AND windburn. there was one stretch with about a 5 percent grade downhill and everyone was still having to really pedal to move. otherwise, it was fun. made the most of the good downhills. weeee.
What would you do differently?:

drink less. i always seem to drink too much on the bike.
Transition 2
  • 03m 38s
Comments:

again, didn't rush.
Run
  • 1h 06m 16s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

not sure about my rank, but i bet its 13 or 14. my big concern on the run was havig gastrintestinal distress. i normally don't, but on thursday i still had stomach cramps and the diarrhea, so this was a REAL concern. i also drank too much on the bike, so the combo made for some very mild stomach issues. i wanted them to remain mild, which meant that my pace really slowed down. i walked through the water stops and occationally walked on and off on the hills. also had the left ball of foot heating up issue again, which i will ask about at the running shop. want to avoid hot feet on the half-marathon in two weeks and on the 1/2 IM next month. overall, not my best run. haven't a 10+ minute mile pace in a race for a while...but i'd rather have that than, well, i won't go into details.
Post race
Warm down:

found bill and fi. hung out with the FABULOUS BT FOLKS! then we had to take off to pick up ella who had been spending the weekend with my parents.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

GASTROENTERITIS.

Event comments:

i would do this race again, for sure. i have to say, it was liberating. i went into it just wanting to finish, and in a way, it brought back the feelings i had at my first tri. i really was happy JUST to finish. having placed at a few races, i can feel myself get more and more competitive about times. it was nice to let go of that for a day. since this season has been a bit rocky so far, i'm glad to have been able to make that mental shift. it will be important for me to focus on my body and my own race when i do my first 1/2 IM. this race became a training race in a totally different way than i had planned - mental training - and i think that is a very very good thing.

Yay!  I'm glad you were feeling good enough to race today - and even with all the cards stacked against you, you had a VERY respectable showing!  Way to go, Autumn!

Nice race Autumn!!

Smart racing as well.....keeping yourself well and knowing you have other bigger races coming up.

I think you were speedy in all three parts...I'd love one of your three paces at my Olys.

So were you more competitive in the male 50-54 AG or your true AG? Pretty funny...

I love your mental attitude recalling your early tri days and that feeling of finishing your first...cool stuff!

I hope to meet you this summer at the Brewhouse race in August..with my 5 family members all racing.

actually, i tried to figure out my place for my correct age group, even though i was listed in the 50-59 year old man group. and actually, i did BETTER in my age group (11/20) than i would have had i really been a 52 year old ma (13/16)

Good job fighting all the adversity.  I hate headwinds too.  Being a big guy, all the small people hide behind me for protection!  Just keep up with the steady pacing and you'll be ready for the 1/2 Ironman!

Nice race Autumn consider you had been sick.  At least you didn't puke on yourself during the bike, like certain BTers do.

Autumn, you're such a stud for showing up and gutting out this race. Most of us mortals would've thrown in the towel and said "maybe next year." So mad props to you! (Is that what the kids are saying these days? Mad props? That's a good thing, right?)

See you at MinneMan!
