Champion 4942 Richmond, VA | Subject: I think I just stumbled upon a cause for childhood obesity Both my boys are on the neighborhood swim team. They love it, swim a couple hours a day and have a couple of meets per week. Last Friday was the first meet of the year. The place is packed. This kids all gave everything and had a great time. No way to fault the kids - A for effort. But most of them stood around, chatting with friends, and then jumping in the pool two or at most three time and swimming 25 to 50 meters. While not swimming, parents had set-up blankets filled with nothing but potato chips, sugary drinks, candy. The concession stand was doing a brisk business selling hot dogs, candy, chips, regular soda and baked potatoes with bacon and sour cream to the kids. We brought watermelon slices, pretzels and water. Our kids had the "why do you hate me" look going on all the time. But maybe when your child burns 50 calories total swimming in an event, they don't need to consume 1000 dead calories around the event. (kicker was the number of families going out for pizza afterwards) i don't get it. these kids, blessed with impeccable metabolisms, but having 2 bags of chips, 2 regular cokes, a hot dog and a package of gummy worms for swimming a 50 meter event - something doesn't add up... |

One girl for softball games (2) had six PowerAid's and not the small ones. It was hot and she was sweating. I asked her to drink water, and brought water to every game we had in a cooler. The water was barely used.

Last season he was only swimming 25m free. Show up, swim, leave. My wife and I would shake our heads at the poor parents just settling in for a 5-6 hour meet. Now, I understand how it is tolerable.

Suggesting what parents should bring to fuel their kids that are competing. Although, I doubt they would take the advice. I see this type of eating all the time at family events. 5 bowls of different chips and dips and 1 veggie platter. Kids and adults engorging on the chips and dips. You know which plate I am picking my food from, but I cant help but feel bad when my little girl is begging for a chip and I am saying no have a carrot or tomato. |

When my daughter was about 4, she was used to having a bedtime snack every night of an apple, cut into slices. One night, we were out of fruit. I had to tell her "You can't have an apple. You have to have a cookie". She was NOT happy. |

My daughters soccer team takes turns bringing the after game snack on the weekends. I gave them orange slices, trail mix, and water. Needless to say I wasn't the favorite parent. Every other weekend we had to go through her bag and take out the junk. Let's just say the amount of oreo's, sugary drinks, cheetos, etc we took out was mind boggling. One mom even brought cupcakes! |

Pro 15655 | Subject: RE: I think I just stumbled upon a cause for childhood obesity My kids are all active.....and usually very good eaters. My wife actually had them eating frozen peas like most kids would eat popcorn when they were little. As time went on, and they joined in with our active lifestyle, we became less concerned when they wanted ice cream, cookies, or whatever once in a while.....they're kids. We only really draw the line with soda and white bread (they wouldn't touch either anymore)....everything else in moderation with a good foundation of healthy eating ( lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, fish, etc.) doesn't seem to hurt them....all are very fit. I suppose pizza crust counts as white bread....but geez....who deprives their children of pizza once in a while? Edited by Left Brain 2012-06-20 4:16 PM |

One year I put healthy snack ideas in the coaches folders for our youth sports programs... yeah, didn't help... everyone still showed up w/ cookies and candy. |

Champion 7347 SRQ, FL | Subject: RE: I think I just stumbled upon a cause for childhood obesity We would be the watermelon and pretzel parents too. However because of that my kids would rather have fruit than candy any day. Obesity is, in large part (no pun intended), a result of a mindset. That mindset is formed as a child IMO. Elite 3770 | Subject: RE: I think I just stumbled upon a cause for childhood obesity Spot on. Also the number of snacks kids have...at baseball games, birthday parties, even my own school does a snack shack 2 days a week for 6 weeks to raise $ for our school show. The candy and soda the kids drink is frightening.I finally got my school to stop serving Gatorade at lunch. The kids are just drinking it like its punch instead of milk. Now they offer lemonade. Not much better, but at least it's not supposed to be a sports drink. The worst part is my school thought the Gatorade WAS a healthy choice. Sigh. What ever happened to milk?? Champion 10471 Dallas, TX | Subject: RE: I think I just stumbled upon a cause for childhood obesity When I swam in High School, we never had any snacks at races. In fact, I don't remember any water, Gatorade, etc. I wouldn't eat breakfast (maybe I did, but doubtful), and I wouldn't eat till the swim meet was over. Once it was over, I would usually take down a box of Wheat Thins. Snacks? Ha! |

Pro 4824 Houston | Subject: RE: I think I just stumbled upon a cause for childhood obesity I made this exact point about a year ago. One kid swam a 50 drank a huge Gatorade, swam another 50 ate a snickers bar and later had nachos and this kid was already 30 or so pounds overweight. Parents indulge their kids and are afraid to say no. Swim team starts at 7am and goes through 2pm at least so kids need to eat but they don't need to eat crap. |

I agree with the rest of your post. That being said, in this circle, where most of us have a good idea of what eating healthy and living healthy means....we should also not be afraid to say YES! My kids, like all kids, enjoy ice cream here and there, a pizza, more butter than they should have on popcorn....and on and on. My children are all fit. 3 of the 5 are Presidential Fitness Award winners....all of them are extremely active. All of them indulge, with our blessing, in foods that are not ideal, but taste REALLY good, now and then. They're kids. I think balance is important. I think obsession in any direction is bad. I'm not trying to suggest that eating healthy is an obsession......but indulging now and then doesn't have to be either....teaching them the difference is the most important thing to us. As a bonus, those lessons spill over to other aspects of life. |

Well milk would be better... but a lot of schools serve chocolate milk which probably has as much if not more calories as sports drinks! The problem is more if they are serving whole mild, whether chocolate or not. Skim/low fat chocolate milk is not too bad, and kids are more likely to drink chocolate milk. The protein and calcium is going to better than a sports drink, which going to overload them with sugar and salts, leading to obesity and hypertension, not to mention developing a taste/loyalty to sports drinks as the "go to" drink in the future. |
