Subject: aerojacket and hills
Debating whether or not to use Aero jacket in muskoka this year. While it wouldn't be considered crazy hilly to most, it does have some challenging climbs. I'm doing the 5150 course. Any thoughts on whether or not I should use Aero jacket this race and add the 300g of weight? I know Aero trumps weight unless climbing, would this course be hilly enough for weight advantage? Thanks for any thoughts.

If you don't use it, what kind of wheels will you be going with?

unless the course just climbs steeply and never descends...aero trumps weight.

For the vast majority of races, use the wheel cover. There's only a very few circumstances where it may not be beneficial.... extremely hilly courses (especially with longer and steeper grade where weight can actually be a factor), extremely technical courses (where you have lots of accelerations and next to no flat/straight sections). As long as you have a deeper front, you can ride the disc in most conditions. If you don't then, you may feel side winds pushing you around (I know this sounds backwards, but a deeper front will stabilize the disc in the rear as the pressure is equalized across the entire bike).

How hilly is extremely hilly? It kind of depends how much you ride hills... Living in NH, we race in hilly conditions all the time and as long as the climbs are less then 5-6 miles at 8-10%, I would ride my disc...

This is one I have not heard before.  I know the disc can help smooth out the airflow when using a deep front (eg, in most wind conditions a deep front and disc will be more stable than a deep front & deep non-disc rear).  It's not clear to me that going deeper in the front accomplishes the same thing.  But I know aerodynamics aren't always intuitive.

In NH, my guess is that unless you are doing the Mt. Washington Hill Climb, you should probably be using the disc.  If you are doing that climb, then weight-weenie away!

Well, yes, every race is pretty much a disc race here in NH. With that said, we do have some MAJOR climbs around here... after all, it's a mountainous state...
