Subject: beard rash when swimming?
This is odd. I seem to be irritating my skin when I swim; there are symmetric rashes on each side of my chest/shoulder area. I can feel it when I do it but didn't realize it was so bad. Now my wife wonders why I come back with hickeys every time I go swimming.

I don't mind looking silly but I wonder if this is an indication of poor form or over-rotation or something. Anybody else ever get this? If so did you figure out how to stop it?

I think you're supposed to shave your whole body.

I've got the same thing. I don't think it's a form issue ... just a byproduct of movement we've never really made consistently before.

Most of my summer swimming will be done in a wet suit. I'm curious to see how it shows up on my wet suit.

I think if I told my husband I was getting beard rash when swimming, I'd be in a whole lot of trouble Laughing

I actually do this.

Try putting some body glide on the area beforehand or vaseline if you swim without a wetsuit or top part.

I would guess one or both of two things:

You look straight down when you swim? maybe even slightly "down" at your feet?

Or, your breathing (bilateral?) and stroke is slightly out of sync: you still (or almost) keep your mouth free to breathe in when your arm goes into the water on the breathing side. This could be an explanation if you breathe bilaterally.

I get it too, just not to that extent.  I always call it a byproduct of my exceptional form Wink.

Honestyly though I think this could easily happen if you are keeping your head down and are properly rotating your shoulders/body with each stroke.

For me, it happens as I'm pulling my arm back on the breathing side ... not as my arm is re-entering the water.

I get it sometimes but think it's due to poor form, like turning my head before I am fully through the stroke, or not rotating enough, or keeping my chin too low, or some combination thereof. Happens mostly on long sets when I am tired.

Happens to me as well, but only on my right side where I'm a lot less comfortable breathing.

Hehe.

I get that too, but further up my shoulder, closer to the top of my shoulder rather than the front/side.

Perhaps you need more rotation? hehe.

The solution for me is to SHAVE my neck/face before I swim. I'm not prepared enough to bring vaseline or to do something else that requires more preparation. I also tend to do this more in long coarse when my stroke gets longer. It's happening every morning now, and if I don't shave first, it hurts all day.

I'm going to have to pay more attention, I guess.

The bright side is that when it happens, I start thinking about it and forget I'm swimming, which for a novice makes swimming a whole lot easier. I'll go a couple lengths of the pool trying to figure out if it's a problem or not and I forget that I'm supposed to be getting tired and gasping for breath.

Happens to me, although more on the shoulder.   Shave face/neck at 5AM before heading out the door.  I realized it was beard rash when it was worst after an ocean OWS on vacation, and I realized I hadn't shaved in four days!
