Pre-race routine:

Ate 1/3 of a Tim Horton's sesame seed bagel toasted with butter and cheddar cheese roughly 2 hours before the event. Drank a bottle of water from 2 hours before event until event time.
Event warmup:

Dynamic lower body stretching.
Run
  • 39m 40s
  • 5 kms
  • 07m 56s  min/km
Comments:

I was doing pretty well until my inner thighs started to chafe and burn. By the 2nd km they were toast.
What would you do differently?:

I always read - never wear or use any products that you haven't tested in the feild first at a race. Well, never do that. I changed my mind on which shorts to wear at the last minute the morning of the race, a pair which I had never trained in. I will never forget that choice! Bleeding thighs aren't fun, but I managed to tough it out.

  • 22.54 km/hr
Comments:

I was excited that the course was flat because that meant easier, but have since changed my mind. Rolling hills give me a break, where the flat surface made me work constantly for the full distance. Didn't drink enough because I still struggle to drink on my new bike and had to stop. I stopped twice to drink when I probably could have used 4 drinking opportunities.
What would you do differently?:

I need to practice drinking on the bike.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Run
  • 51m 49s
  • 5.2 kms
  • 09m 58s  min/km
Comments:

Due to the chafing described earlier I walked most of this run segment. I t was getting hot so I kept cool by pouring water in my hair and covering it with my hat.
What would you do differently?:

Never wear clothing that I haven't trained in to a race again.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Chafing.

Event comments:

My only complaints would be that the runners from the dualthlon crossed paths with the swimmers coming out of the water and that there was a single entrance for bikers coming in and out of transition with no barrier to protect them from collisions.
