Sunny
Total Time = 6h 50m 3s
Overall Rank = 684/832
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 87/104
Pre-race routine:

up at 4am... plain bagel, peanut butter, water and an 8oz sugar free red bull. Drove to the race site with Rachel, Ken, and Trey. A solid start to the morning!
Event warmup:

donned the wet suit, and swam about 15o meters out and back. First time I had donned the wet suit since Kemah Olympic, April 2011.
Swim
  • 38m 10s
  • 1931 meters
  • 01m 59s / 100 meters
Comments:

Not a PR swim, but seeing that I have only swam 4-5 times in 2012... I will take it. My goal was simply to keep a steady pace, and not go out too fast and feel fatigued. My sighting was very good. I really felt good for the entirity of the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Ha. Swim 2-3 times a week maybe... it's called training!
Transition 1
  • 03m 39s
Comments:

slow and steady T1. Make sure I put on sunscreen, chamois cream, and then headed out on a tough bike course.
What would you do differently?:

for this race...nothing. I was in completer mode and not competer mode.
Bike
  • 3h 20m 4s
  • 56 miles
  • 16.79 mile/hr
Comments:

the first 30ish miles felt really good. Then my lower left back started having spasms and kept getting tight. Had to get out of the saddle and stretch my bike over and over again. Then came the last 16 miles into a head wind, except the last 3 heading back to T2. It was the hottest and windiest course I have ridden in three times here!
What would you do differently?:

not race BSLT under trained! Ha.
Transition 2
  • 04m 57s
Comments:

another slow and steady transition... dried feet and put on socks, tied shoes (no speedlaces for this race this year) and then stopped at the porta-potty before heading out onto the run course.
Run
  • 2h 43m 13s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 12m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

started out at about an 8:30 pace and tried to slowly dial it back... settled into a 9-9:30 pace until mile 3. Threw in the towel, and started walking. I was very hot, stomach was unhappy with the cold water and my upper back, below my right shoulder blade, started cramping. That pain and suffering continued for the remaining 10 miles... I got to run with Rachel for just over a mile, when she caught me at mile 7. She was holding a solid 10:30ish pace and I could not hang. I jog/walked my ass to the finish and headed straight to the med tent for an IV.
Post race
Warm down:

an IV in the med tent and a protein drink, some water and a dreaded walk to the truck, pushing our bikes up the big ass hill out of transition.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

serious lack of training + the heat and wind. But mostly my lack of training. Ha!

Event comments:

I am done with this race! 3 times is plenty. I have had good ('10), bad ('09) and ugly ('12) races here... I am good! Ha.

It's a challenging race that is for the above average athlete. It's simply time for me to enjoy other races besides this one.

Way to tough it out!  I would love swim only 4-5 times in a single year and have that result!
