bwoods0410 - 2012-07-16 4:25 PM Is there anywhere along the route I can fill up my bottles/buy water? Looking at satellite it looks like a lot of nothing.

You're right, nothing, ALOT of nothing but gruesome climbing and really nice views.  Bring AT LEAST 2 bottles with you for the Oly distance.  For the long course, I guess you'll need to have a friend help you with that or bring a CamelBak.

Nope , you have to carry all the water/snacks you will need , there is a fire ranger station off the golden state highway where i have filled up . But its off the highway . The other option would be to place water gallons ahead of your ride .

If you go on one of the preview rides, they will have fluids and goodies for you. Be warned, though, that I went through two bottles by the time I got to Pyramid Lake on one of the preview rides, and that isn't quite the halfway mark for the full long course. I seriously under-estimated the fluids I would need and was VERY thankful the preview ride was supported.

I've been debating whether or not to make my defeat public knowledge, but what the hell! Boy, am I glad I went and check out the ride before I registered. The first 7 miles I was expecting and so it wasn't too bad. The second climb intimidated me a little bit but I made it to the top still standing. I thought to myself, 15 miles and you've done half the climbing, how bad can the rest be? But it just seemed to keep going and going and never let up! I only road about 30 miles before I decided I was not having any fun and this was not for me. But you know how once you start going downhill, the pain is gone, and you're able to register thoughts again? Then I let the disappointment set in that I had actually given up. I returned to my car with my tail between my legs, drove over to the Starbucks parking lot and immediately registered for the Oceanside 70.3. Never having done an HIM I think that course will be a little more beginner friendly.

All this really means is that I won't be able to rest until the next year or two when I overcome this challenge, M3 Magic Mountain Man!

I think you made a good decision there.  M3 long course is BRUTAL for a first timer HIM type distance.  I'm also considering Oceanside myself next year.  I'll see how I fair with Orangeman in a couple months first, hehe!

So, I rode from my house and did ridge route and back home.  That hill is no joke.  This should be a hoot.

Rode the bike course again and with the turnaround on templin now at the power station it will add a much needed flat section before the second climb . Its been repaved and is in beautiful smooth condition. Sucky part of this year schedule is the OLY now wont start until 8:30am so we miss out on 90 mins of cool morning temps . I really dont understand why OLY can't start waves at 7:30 am instead . Maybe next year i will sign up for Playa del Rey OLY instead.

Bummer to hear about the start time.

I've been nursing a hamstring injury which is finally about fully healed up - so unfortunately I'm in "just finish" mode for this race.  Didn't get to do any of the practice rides - so I'm hoping the hill and elevation change aren't too much of a rude awakening for me lol

It'll still be there on Sunday.  It shouldn't be too hot.  I'm guessing that it'll actually be pretty chilly in the morning and won't be warming up until everyone is done.

This may be the LAST One , Don't miss the fun . They have added a Sprint with only 5 miles of climbing for that one .

I've done no training since Orangeman so I'm too fat and unfit to race now, hehe!

Great job.  That was a murderous race.  And a run that will soon be forgot, but hey when the majority are running 10-11 min miles I guess it was just hard getting those legs running up hills after 2 hours of climbing hills on the bike.  I was certainly an experience.
