I'm in! This is my first reply to a post, first sprint tri (in the summer) and first attempt at losing at least 100lbs....at 300lbs now....been as low as 205, but that been awhile, always been obsessed with triathlons...so I figured training and losing weight should team up and maybe keep my focus with a goal ahead!I've always been a good swimmer...former swim team girl, but I'm looking for a bike now and will need to lose before actual running is an option....but I want this!!! Any advice for me?Thanks!Tri-ing to be healthier, happier!

not sure how many times you can restart without the entire world giving up on you, but I'm on day two of being in control of my eating. Technically I'm always in control. I just made some bad choices over the past few months. Call it an experiment to prove what I already knew. If I eat whatever I want and don't exercise, I will gain weight. Just keep swimming, right?

The world won't give up on you and neither should you.

I used to think this way and was in a very unhappy and obese place.  I either thought I was on point with my eating or I was a complete failure.

I stopped thinking that way about it.  I now enjoy food and don't often feel guilty about what I eat.  I don't have to be perfect to be working on eating healthier.

It really helped when I stopped expecting perfection from myself, the guilt was very destructive.  The rest of your life is a long time to maintain perfect.

Thanks Chunga well said. I don't know how many times i have failed to stick to restrictive eating habits only to say well today is blown so I'll wait till tomorrow and try again. The blown day becomes a major setback. Thinking I need to chill out and really do my best.

This is interesting because my wife does the same thing. I've tried to encourage her to not worrry about it, but it is hard for her to do that too. Keep plugging away.

Hi there!

I read through some of the posts and would love to join this group if I can. It is SO encouraging to hear about other triathletes with a few... or more... to lose!

Introductions.... my highest weight was 308 (I'm 5'8") in 2008. I dropped down to 250 and hovered there while I did my first triathlon in 2010. I did two more (all sprints) in 2011, then took a year off. Now I'm REALLY hoping to get back into it. In 2011, I got down to 217 and felt fantastic, and I still could have lost another 40 or so. This past year I didn't really exercise or work out and I got back up to 260 which is where I am currrently. I cant believe I let myself gain over 40 lbs

I would love to lose about 100, but I think realistically I should lose 75 or so and see how that looks.

If its not too late to join this group, I would love some encouragement and I would love to cheer each of you on!

Hi
I'd like to join the drop 100 challenge please. My heaviest was 260 and currently am at 231 after losing 29 last year, would ideally like to lose a further 80-90. I find it v difficult to lose weight and tend to have to diet strictly and exercise to lose any weight - even then I can go weeks without losing anything (I have an underactive thyroid which has an impact). I'm currently training for a sprint at the end of May and taking part in a triathlon is something I've always wanted to do but have shied away from as I don't consider myself as athletic and doing it is part of my motivation to keep going with the diet and exercise,

Had a pretty neutral week. I was off work for 7 days but it rained 6 of them. Kinda glad to be back at work. It is nice to be out of the house. I did get some runnning in this week but was no angel as far as my diet goes.

I know I'm late to the party and have already lost my 100, but I'd like an honorary membership to the club!  I'm working on my last 10 pounds for the 2nd time.  For a bit of background, I hit my 100 pound goal, dropping from 282 to 182.  Then switched focus to IM training.  During that year, I took some liberties with my diet - and my appetite was insatiable!  Anyway, up to 195 by race day, and by the time I came home from vacationing and gorging for the next week, I was tipping 200.  I've been back home and at it since around December 1.  I am down to 194 and putting lost muscle back on, so I'm looking MUCH better.  Still, I WANT 12% BF!  I'm guessing I'll be happy at 12% and 185..so I'm shooting for 185 while adding muscle.

For you guys - for the love of God, hang in there!  I cannot begin to express how amazing my entire life feels as a new person - a person that confidently tackles ANY challenge thrown at me.  Mountain? No problem.  Ironman? I set out on the Ironman mission expecting to push the very limit of what my body was capable of, only to realize that I could have tackled a longer race.  It's true - I have NO limits.  I'm not saying I'm a superhero.  I'm just saying that you've never seen me and a superhero in the same room at the same time.Wink

In all seriousness, I'm excited for you guys to find your way to the life that I've found.  some rambling tidbits you might find useful:  Setbacks happen.  Perfection isn't practical for most people and it's discouraging to not meet that impossible standard, so don't worry about it. Shoot for improvements, not perfection. It's rare that someone finds the way that works for them on the first try, so keep at it!  Also remember: small improvements/changes will almost always last longer than sudden sweeping changes. Don't worry about the overwhelming big picture.  Make a little progress every day. Whether you've managed a 100 calorie deficit or a 100 calorie deficit for the day, you've succeeded for the day!  An old Chinese proverb says that as long as we are facing the right direction, all we have to do is keep walking.

Cheers - Lloyd

Actually, I did claim to be a superhero once   I'll let you read a clip from my blog - It's a question from a reader and my response.  I've gotten a lot of feedback from this one, and perhaps you will find something useful.

HELP!

I have been back and forth with working out, eating right and sleeping well the last couple years…and I’m sick of it! I am READY to see some real life changes again!  I am only 26 and am tired of feeling like a slave to my weight, and I want to take control!  I am a very very busy guy, but I know this is something I need and want to make time for!

I am starting P90X next week. Please pass this way any words of advice or encouragement, I know I will need them!

- Josh

Josh, I either want to high five you or slap you to get you focused.  Look at me.  Look me in the eyes right now while you read this.  I understand exactly where you are… After an entire life of being the fat kid – unable to hop a fence, climb a tree, or run the soccer field with my friends – I’m now a cliff climbing, Ironman triathlete, all around adventure guy.   I enjoy white water rafting, obstacle races, and even the beach for the first time since I was a toddler.  I’m an athlete now and give my body the food it needs to perform the very demanding tasks I ask of it, and rebuild itself after it’s done them.  My life changed when I learned to get my high from looking in the mirror and seeing someone approaching who I wanted to be, instead of getting my high from a fu**ing bag of Oreos. I get my high every time my body proves that it will do anything I ask it to, and when I catch girls checking me out.   I’m 37 years old, in the best shape of my life and I get my high from being a frikkin superhero that people admire.  Even people that I previously envied as “in shape” are amazed at my adventures – they have neither the confidence or energy to tackle what I call simply a “fun weekend.”

Josh, I’m making the most of what I’ve got left, but you’re so young and have much more time and ability than me… I will hunt you down and slap you if you waste what should be the best years of your life feeling sorry for yourself. You’ve got it in you to do everything I’ve done and things I won’t have time to accomplish before my body says I’m too old. Are you still looking at me? I understand that the weights feel heavy right now…that your muscles begin to burn after a few reps. I understand that walking up a single flight of stairs makes your legs burn and steals your composure as you become very out of breath. I was you, brother – sick of being embarrassingly out of shape, I’d get out of breath getting up from the couch to go to the kitchen. I always had to stand on someones porch and recover before knocking because it was humiliating to be breathless when they answered the door. You don’t have to live that life. Working out and eating right is hard, Josh, But not liking who you see in the mirror every day is even harder.

A famous marathoner said “I could never run 26 miles, I run just one mile 26 times.”  That little bit of wisdom that has gotten me through countless mental and physical challenges.  My advice: Forget thinking about “90 Fu**ing days?! That’s a long time…”  Just worry about your next chance to workout or your next meal.  I’m going to say that again -. Don’t worry about changing anything forever..just make the right choice, right now.  Then repeat.

The good news is that every day, making the right choice becomes easier until it is habit.  For now:  Dig, brother. Dig deep.  Because that’s what a badass does.

Lloyd

Got on the trainer and did 45 minutes worth of Spinnerval's bending crankarms. I didn't do the squats as perscribed but I did 6 sets of 10. Rememer this is day one of this workout and I still weigh 320. I am certain I'll be sore for the next few days.
