Subject: Lactate Threshold Field Test During 5K Portion of Sprint Tri
I have been wanting to do a LT field test, however, I haven't found a convenient opportunity to do one as I am doing longer runs. Anyway, I have a sprint tri coming up this weekend. Is there any reason why I couldn't just wear my HR strap and conduct the test during the run and hit the lap button about 20 minutes before the finish to get my avg HR? Races seem like a good opportunity to do one since you are normally pushing it. I guess I could find a stand alone 5k, but it would be convenient to git 'er done this weekend.Your thoughts are appreciated.

Sounds like a good opportunity to me, definitely as a starting point if nothing else. Make sure you really put the effort into that 5K like you would an open one and try to pace it accordingly.

Go out harder than you think you can, hang on for dear life, puke at the finish line.

That would probably work as well as any other method of field testing.

Some things to keep in mind about the HR value you come up with:

  • If it's hot, your HR will measure higher than it would normally so if your LT was at 165bpm normally, you will see 175bpm then.
  • Because the entire race is much longer than 20 minutes, your 'average' effort level is below your actual LT, but by the time you are running and 20 minutes from the end I assume you will be hitting LT.
  • The running pace you run may not compare to your LT running pace when you aren't coming off the bike, so be careful when translating your LT measurement to PACES.

It might not be bad as a starting point, but it may not be very good either.  If you want to do a field test, you should do so in a manner that you can repeat under similar conditions again.  For a number of reasons, the end of a sprint tri would not qualify.

Totally agree.  Make time for the test.  Do it at least two or three times so you can get rid of any variations.  Then take the avg.
