It must be the 4th of July as I'm drawn to watching a hot dog eatting contest on ESPN2. Joey Chestnut just powered his way to his 6th straight title with easy and looks to have tied his world record with 68 hot dogs in 10 min. Think about that. That is about 20,000 calories in 10 minutes. Wow!

You know, when you hear the number, it's crazy. And I suppose this goes back a long way and can be fun. I can also probably guess you are not in training to be in eating contest.... but when I see stuff like this it just pops a vein out in my forehead.

People actually train to enlarge their stomach to see how much and how fast they can shove stuff into it. Of all things to spend ones time on, I find this one to be less productive than a crack habit. I just don't get it. So wrong on so many levels.

Sorry to be the 4th of July Scrooge. I realize some folks just like to have fun. Carry on, and get off my lawn.

You get worked up over stuff that other people do that has absolutely nothing to do with/for/to you? I don't think I'm even going to try to understand that. Weird.

i once watched a special on kobayashi, the prior champ.  he didn't train to eat hot dogs...the guy was an absolute beast in the gym.  he ate a ton (of good foods, that is) to fuel his workouts.  it was realllly impressive.  he only trained for the dogs a very small portion of the year.

The internet must really drive you crazy telling everyone how much you don't care about what others think.

The timing of this thread compared to some of the things that I saw @Seaworld yesterday... Sad and maddening at the same time.Kids that looked 10 or below on the verge of needing canes or scooters due to obesity.

Six in a row!  He must be on steroids and such, get him tested!

I missed it this year, but it is always fun to watch.  It's amazing how fast and how much they can eat.

It is possible to train ahead of time for an eating contest, although the IFOCE does not recommend it. Competitors can train their brains to ignore the "full" feeling (actually the stomach muscles relaxing as they stretch) by repeatedly filling the stomach with large meals or through water training. Water training requires drinking an entire gallon of water in 30 seconds. The water stretches out the stomach. Supposedly, this makes it easier to down food in huge quantities. Neither of these activities is healthy. The water exercise can be very dangerous, resulting in perforations of the stomach lining and water intoxication, which is potentially fatal.

Perhaps BT can put out a "Couch to 50 hotdogs in 10 weeks" program.

Be honest...which of those records do you think you'd have a chance at breaking???  I'm rollin' with 2.76 pounds of bologna in 6 minutes.  That just doesn't seem too hard.

Serious question, do you think elite level triathletes live a healthy lifestyle?  I mean elite.

Compared to what? I'm not going to compare a gifted human athlete at the extreme end of athletic performance with a guy that can shove 60 hot dogs down his pie hole faster than anyone else because he stretched his stomach.

2lbs 9oz of Pomme Frites in 8 minutes sounds pretty do-able. I went to Friendly's after my last HIM and I ended up eating all of my fries and most of my wife's and son's. Not in 8 minutes though. More like 9 or 9 1/2.

I suggest our own little competition.  Someone pick the food, then video yourself with a timer and promise no video wizardry or shenanigans.  Post the video here..    You set the "Record" and the rest of us BT'rs can try to beat it...

It's a handy thing to know for when your kid inevitably asks you what they call French fries in France.

The weird thing is there's a separate category for French fries, but they're Nathan's fries which are big thick crinkle cut fries. Pomme frites I assume they mean shoestring fries, which I think would be easier to eat. Besides the record for Fremch Fries is 4+ lbs.
