This will be my 5th time doing this event. I only live at 2nd and Vaughn, so it pretty much a back-yard event for me. I'll probably just ride my bike down to City Island on Sunday.

I hope it's going to be wetsuit legal water temps because I could use the buoyancy. Otherwise, as long as it's an even playing field and no one doesn't wear a wetsuit, that's fine. Last year I frgot the Body Glide and had to go without the suit.

And yes, it is flat on the bike, and just a short incline getting on the bridge at the begining and end of the run.

Tricatsports events are NOT USAT sanctioned, so they let you wear wetsuits at any temp.

Yea my Back yard too I live on second in Wormleysburg. Suppose I could have a good warm up and swim to the start . Idk about the wetsuit because while they say there is a limit I hear they have never enforced it.

Yup, I'll be there, hoping to beat my time from last year.  Glad it will be just a bit cooler than it has been the past few weeks.  Good luck to all!

Sorry I am missing this year.  I promised the Mrs. I would do a 5k with her.  Its called the color run.  Not sure if I am going to PR it with people throwing colored corn sugar in my face but we will see.

Hey Melbo.  I was reading a post of yours a few weeks back and you explained your avatar photo.  Where is this abandoned turnpike you speak of?

Good luck to the rest of you and crush your previous times!

stilgarnaib: This is from http://www.pike2bike.org/ website:

The P2B is located in South Central Pennsylvania in both Bedford and Fulton Counties.

Because it was part of the PA Turnpike it can be easily gotten to ON the PA Turnpike.

Located at the junction of US 30, I-70 and I-76 in Breezewood

http://www.pike2bike.org/directions.htm

The website isn't navigating the best, but if you keep going to the other pages from the home page, it kinda works.  Links to the other pages on history, etc. are at the very bottom of the home page.  We had a great time when we went, but you definitely need to take headlights to see going through the tunnels: they are long, too long to use natural light from the ends.  Very neat area.  I got a decent sized group together and we actually did a guided tour with a local bike shop dude who provided lights, which was good because I only had one or 2, plus he gave us a lot of the background history and behind the scenes knowledge which we would've missed out on.  But it is totally do-able without a guide.  I just like history and also, like I said, had a group to try to get lights for.  When I go again we will go sans guide (and a few less people ).

Sorry for the minor hijack, I was going to PM but then I thought others might like the info, too.

Edited to add: MTB or 'cross bikes would be your best options.  I wouldn't trust skinny, delicate road tires.  There are some very rough patches of road and all sorts of debris, both natural and from the slow deterioration of the tunnels and road.  We took MTBs.

Yeah, the 7 am start should help a lot with avoiding the heat.  I always worry about the river being gacky there...dead fish and stuff...  does anyone know the water temp?  I imagine it's pretty warm.
