Swim
Comments: I felt really rested for the swim - but my ribs on my left side were killing me. Every time I reached out, it hurt. Not terribly but enough to make me not pull as hard on the left side. I was also in the back so I caught a lot of muck. One motivator was that 2 strong women who had started 5 minutes behind me actually passed me. I felt like I approached the swim well. I started slow and paced myself well. Coming out of the water, I felt like I had done well but was also ready for the bike. Finally - so much warmer than hopkinton. What would you do differently?: I'd find a way to warm up. I need to work on my swim... 2:21 is an improvement - but I need to get faster. Below it asks about overall swim. I graded it good in relation to how far I've come since my last tri. Had I gone at the same pace as in Hopkinton - it would have taken me 3 minutes longer to complete - even though I swam 2x the distance. Transition 1
Comments: Wish I could give myself a failing grade on getting into shoes... I tried the rubber bands and it was an epic fail. I also skipped socks. Even though I got out of transition fairly quickly (largely because of no wet suit), it still took me almost half a mile to get everything situated when I got on the bike. What would you do differently?: Need to practice every week! Bike
Comments: The bike was my best leg... after a SLOW start, I followed my plan: As I rode down Manuka - I got my average speed up to 17. I took it easy to the turn around but then tried to average above 17 until I made the second turn around at Van Tyle. On my way back, I averaged 18.5 mph which would have made me 9th in my age group. Then I hoofed it uphill back to the park. When I got off the bike, I again felt like I had hit the right balance between pushing hard and leaving some in the tank for the run. What would you do differently?: I need to get stronger on the bike - I was 3 mph slower than everyone else. I need to figure out how to get into shoes. I need to improve my position on the bike. I also need to work on changing gears to adapt to the course. HOWEVER - it was the bike that made the sub three hours possible. Transition 2
Comments: Left my helmet on as I left T2 (duh). I sat down to put on my shoes. I took time to grab some water. It wasn't pretty What would you do differently?: Almost everything... Run
Comments: Wow - this was a thing of beauty. I really followed Kevin's advice and tried to run 10 minute miles. I came pretty close and my longest mile was still less than 11 minutes. I felt really good for the first three miles and then started sucking wind at mile 4. I knew I was just gonna have to suck it up and I kind of went within myself. By the time I took a left to cut over to West Otsego lake drive, I was really hurting. As I took a left back into the park, I tried to speed up but it wasn't happening. When I heard my kids yelling at me, I just sucked it up and went all out. My wife took a picture and it looks like I'm ready to kill someone. I knew I was damn close to a sub 3:00 time and didn't want to quit. It was my best kick ever and I crossed the finish line as the clock ticked 2:59:59.8 Mission accomplished. I avoided having to drink warm coors light and instead feasted on burgers and fries the next day for lunch. What would you do differently?: Train for the run more. Post race
Warm down: The post race activities sucked so I went home and stretched. I had brauts and beer for lunch. What limited your ability to perform faster: I need to continue to get stronger and faster.. I need to improve my transition times. Event comments: If you have never raced in other races - you might think that MM was a pretty good tri. But to be honest, it was pretty minimalist. The tee shirts were average, no body marking, the post race food was poor (hot dogs potato chips, and oranges (and they let non races eat before all the races finished so by the time I got there - there wasn't much left). While there were enough people working the course so no one got lost - they didn't have a global picture of the race so they weren't able to answer even basic questions. They didn't even post the times for all the age groupers - just the winners. I liked the spirit of the race and the pre race briefing was very good. I agreed whole heartedly with their decision to push the start of the race back due to a thunderstorm moving through. It wasn't bad, but I probably wouldn't do it again. I woke up to a thunderstorm. Some of the lightening was close and the thunder was unusually loud. I was worried that they might cancel the race.
For breakfast, Oatmeal, banana, and a cup of blue berries at 6:15 (turned out to be 2 hours and 15 minutes before the starting gun sounded) I also drank about 12 oz of water. Got changed into race shirt and OP biking shorts.
Not much... Because of the weather - people we warming up on trainers under the pavillion and were not warming up on the roads. I thought about warming up in the water - but decided against it because I didn't know how long I would have to wait and was concerned about getting cold. Plus, I had hurt my ribs and stretching only made it worse. So I chatted it up with people on the beach.
