Pre-race routine:

Up at 4am. Ate usual oatmeal breakfast. Packed up and left at 4:30am.

Got to the race site early and got a good spot. Talked with the Gettysburg crew and did about 15 minutes warm-up on the bike at 6:30am.
Event warmup:

15 min warm-up on the bike. Quick swim.
Swim
  • 17m 47s
  • 1480 yards
  • 01m 12s / 100 yards
Comments:

Water was too hot for a wetsuit. Non USAT race so there were no wetsuit rules. Once one guy put on a wetsuit...everybody else followed. Should have just agreed to leave them in the car. I was cooked by the end of the swim.

I didn't have a great swim. Way too hot and off form a bit due to vacation. Had a rough start but settled into a good rhytm by the end of the swim.
Transition 1

Good.
Bike
  • 34m 33s

Comments:

Bike was pretty good. My best effort at this race to date. Last year I did 34:51 on the same course. Quite a few fast bike times this year. Might have been a bit faster if I were better rested but still a good bike overall. Felt much better the second half of the bike.

Leap-frogged a bit during the second half of the bike. Had a guy draft off of me for a while but I think we both tried to keep it legal for the most part.

At the end of the bike, I guy that was biking with the second half of the ride wiped out big time coming around the last corner. Saw him after the race and he had some nice road rash but was otherwise OK.
Transition 2
  • 00m 29s
Comments:

After dismounting the bike, I slipped on the timing mat and wiped out. A couple cuts on my leg but nothing too terrible. I stood up and said "Ouch" and got a good laugh from the crowd. The fall only cost me 3-5 seconds so not a big deal.
What would you do differently?:

Not fall.
Run
  • 17m 39s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 05m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

A bit overweight and lethargic feeling during the run. Probably 5-6 pounds overweight due to vacation 7 days before the race. Not much running during vacation either. Still a good run though. Kept the effort high and passed 5-6 people. Probably moved from about 8th-9th to 4th during the 5K.
What would you do differently?:

Not gain weight on vacation.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Vacation the 7 days before the race with too much eating and drinking. I don't think I would have changed anything though because who wants to watch calories when you're at the beach. Corona's taste too good on the beach.

Event comments:

Good local race for a good cause. Good vibe. Kids race after the adult tri is great.
