Subject: 8 Weeks To Swim 1 Mile

Hello All!

I am signed up for the Hy-Vee Olympic triathlon in 8 weeks.  I did my first try a few weeks ago and really really struggled on the swim.

Is 8 weeks enough time to get up to a 1 mile swim?  I am considering backing out because I feel I wont be ready for the swim..

This plan is great.  6 weeks to swim a mile plan.  I have used it (without the first two weeks) when I take a looooong break from swimming to get back in the groove.

So, to rephrase your question: "Should you give up or try?" Well, there's a reason it's called tryathlon.

+1 on her training plan.  I could barely swim one lap without getting tired, and I finished my first mile after the 3rd week.  8 weeks is plenty of time.  If you can, find a swim coach and take a lesson.  Usually pretty cheap ($20/hr or if you have 2 people $10 each/hour).

8 weeks i enought o get up to a mile.

You might not do freestyle the whole way, you might throw in some breast or backstroke.

Nevertheless I think teh key is to be consistent with doing 3 to 4 sessions of swimming a week.

Each for about an hour and then increaseing the distance(s) each week.

You can google for "0 to 1650" for some guidance.

This is really awesome, thanks for asking this question. I'm a newb too (first tri was a month ago, next one is in 3 weeks) and I've been pining for a week about a tri that I want to do in Sept but didn't think I'd possibly be able to do the swim by then. It's only 750m, but I haven't done any OW yet (first time will be this Sunday). Right now I'm swimming about 1000m total in my regular workouts, with my "no stopping" distance at 300m. Seeing that link makes me think - maybe???

Any hope I could be ready for a 750 OW in 7 weeks? If not that's ok, just crush my dreams now before I get too excited.

X4 - I finished it in about 4 and half weeks - I skipped the first week and the last week (just did 1650 as the last work out of the fifth week). If you have some swim training, just jump into whatever week's workouts look similar to what you're doing now.

Good luck you can do it.   I wanted to do hyvee this year but after my swim at the iowa games tri I realized I need to learn to swim better.  Maybe next year!

Why would you consider backing out of something you've signed up for 2 months before it even happens?...I mean, at the very least back out the day before

Everyone has said it, not much I can add...You can totally do it.

8 weeks is more than enough to get to a mile, from my experience

i just did a oly last sunday (granted it was the nyc tri, and the current and all), but a month ago i did my first sprint 400y swim, and i really really struggled (to put it mildly) to complete the distance. a month before that, i could hardly do 2 laps in a pool. To put it short: i went from being not able to swim more than 50 yards in a pool to completing the nyc swim without having to stop (frontcrawl) in 8 weeks, maybe 9

But, i put some huge amount of effort towards it. I took swim classes, 4 days in the pool per week, OWS every sunday for the last 4 weeks, etc. My stroke is not even close to being perfect, but i did it. So yes, you can too if you put in the required effort.
