Pre-race routine:

Ate breakfast. Got to race around 6:30 to prepare and laid out all my gear. Embarrassingly forgot to take off the caps on my biking shoes and didn't remember until I was in line to jump in and start the swim. Just delayed my transition a little.
Event warmup:

Jogged about half a mile and swam a quick 400m to get both arms and legs warmed up.
Swim
  • 03m 11s
  • 273 yards
  • 01m 10s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim went well. Had to swim past a couple of people and got into a traffic jam at the 175 mark when I pushed off the wall and ended up next to 2 people side by side. Otherwise, swim was too short to really get the stroke going.
What would you do differently?:

More yardage per week and not slip on the ladder on the way out.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Haven't really practiced transitions. Need to learn how to mount better. Instead, just kind of stopped and got on my bike to clip in as if I was just starting a nice Sunday ride.
What would you do differently?:

Forgot to pick up a GU to use during the bike. Would tape it to my top tube next time.
Bike
  • 50m 56s
  • 16 miles
  • 18.85 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt good on the bike...really comfortable.
What would you do differently?:

Need to get more miles in to increase my endurance. Speed was pretty decent, but biking has always been a weakness for me.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Was trying to ride barefoot and my foot slipped causing my shoe to hit the ground and pop off. Had to go back and get it. Would have been better just leaving them on.
What would you do differently?:

Leave the shoes on. OK to unstrap them, but not ride on them unless I practice more beforehand.
Run
  • 25m 7s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 05s  min/mile
Comments:

Calf cramped right at the beginning. I think because I didn't have enough calories in me from forgetting the GU early on and could have drank more on the bike. Once I got moving some, it seemed to stretch out. Felt excessively sluggish.
What would you do differently?:

Would have worked some bricks into the training beforehand. Plan right now, doesn't have it for 2 more weeks.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and took in a lot of water/fluids.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nutrition was the biggest obstacle (both before the race and after). Training would be next. Aiming for a HIM in October and started training 3 weeks before the race. Looking forward to seeing progress in the future.

Event comments:

Good first year for the Furman race. Hot weather, which is typical for a July race in SC. Otherwise, SETUP Events puts on a decent race regardless.
