Haven't done the race, but here's what I know.  It has sold out and has gone to a wait list this year, and it has been around since 2002, which speaks to its reputation among runners.  Their website has a section-by-section breakdown of elevation, and it looks very hard, with 4400' of elevation gain.  I love the idea of a 600' climb from mile 26 - 28.  Looks like only one person has ever gone under 4 hours on this course.  A friend of mine ran it in 2010 and speaks highly of the trail conditions, difficulty, and views on course.  Hope you get to do it, would love to hear your report!

I've done it the last 2 years and will be there again this year. It's low key like most ultras; but you do have 500 runners in the 50K and another 300 in the 11-mile race (800 total) whereas many ultras cap the races between 200-300 runners. I think it's the second largest ultra east of the Mississippi or something like that. The pre-race expo/dinner is nice with a lot of venders and swag. Race day is a lot of fun as well. The aid stations, volunteers, and post race food have been good.

The course itself is beautiful. There are sections that are very runable and some that are not. You are usually going either uphill or down, not much flat trail. And there are a lot of rocky and technical sections that will bring you to tears. I have friends who absolutely will not do it, but it's a race that I really enjoy.
