I'm coming to this late and I'm so glad to hear that things are better- a couple of things to consider that I don't think were mentioned:

You mentioned you are post-menopausal- during menopause the skin in the genital area can become thinner because of a decrease in estrogen (some women have trouble with "other activities" during this time; this could be compounding the other issues.  I have no idea whether estrogen creams could help in this case, but it could be something to ask your doctor.  Also, hydrocortisone/steroid creams can thin the skin, especially if they are used for too long, or with too much potency- this could also make the problem worse.
