Did my first swim at Bidwell park today - where the Race to the Ridge Tri will be held next saturday. After about 35 minutes, I had finally finished 1/2 mile (swimming is a real struggle for me). I got out, and while drying off put on my running shoes (always thinking about T-1), and took off for a short jog through the park. A couple of young girls sitting off in the grass saw me taking off running and stated "AND NOW HE IS GOING JOGGING?????".

They were absolutly incredulous that:

1) Anyone would swim that far if there were not in a sinking boat
2) That anyone would consider running after swimming for over 1/2 an hour.

Maybe we are all insane, and the people laying in the park drinking beer are the only sane ones??????????

Reminds me of a story of a bike ride. A group of us were at our lunch stop where a festival was happening in a park. One went to the rest room and while ahe waiting to use it a young girl asked how far we were riding. My friend said "about 30 miles today". The young girl looked at her wide eyed and asked "why?"

But WE are the sane ones, taking care of ourselves!  Good for you!

I had a similar experience this weekend. We're in the process of moving into a new place, and free time is pretty much non-existent. I had a list of things a mile long to do on Saturday and it didn't look like I'd get my biking in, so I decided to turn mowing the lawn into a workout by doing it at a run. It was better than no workout and I was able to keep my HR in the aerobic zone for almost an hour. Makes sense, right? My wife spoke with some of the new neighbors and apparently they considered it quite a show and think the new guy in the neighborhood (me) is just a little weird.

Which reminds me: Ron, what do you think of including "lawn mowing" in the Training Logs? :-)

I do include lawnmowing but I put it under aerobics.  I figure if I am out walking/pushing a lawnmower it should count as aerobic activity.  Having a section on lawnmowing would be cool but then I would need one for splitting wood.

just a little nuts --
last summer was particularly busy and workout time was at a premium. (tri. training had not yet entered the picture) I had to stack about 8 chords of split wood, moving it about 50 yards and up a slight incline in a wheel barrow. To make it a real challange, I put on a back pack loaded with 40 lbs of weight... yea, just a little nuts.

ok, it may not be so macho, but, done right, gardening, house cleaning, and other chores could be counted under something. How about a general "domestic aerobics" icon?

I’ve build a couple of sheds, put up a fence and I’m going to be putting up a few partition walls in this summer- can you add that as well please :-)

And don’t forget to wear a 40lb pack while putting in the request so you can put that in the logs :D
