Subject: Mooseman
Hi all,First post here but have spent some time browsing these forums (okay maybe too much time). I was hoping someone could tell me when registration for Mooseman 2013 will open up. I've checked the website and, unless I'm blind or missed something, it hasn't updated at all. Thanks for any info!Steph

Articles seem to indicate that there will not be an Ironman Mooseman 70.3 next year.  Maybe someone else will take it over (or back?).

Whoah, really? AND Rhode Island gone?

My bet is that Rev3 Maine and Quassy will pick up a lot from this. Eagleman sells out instantly, and Timberman is pretty challenging and turns a lot of folks off I suspect accordingly, as does the Patriot. Any other options I'm forgetting? I was planning on doing at least one of these next year.

They added Raleigh this year, and we have a $199 registration through today.  I am close to registering, but I had ideas of Honu and that's the same weekend.

You also have Mont Tremblant, which is an incredible venue.  But it's already sold out.

I'd still like to check out one of the HITS races sometime too, and those registrations start out at $75 if you get them early enough.

Wow.  I just went to the forum at www.timbermantri.com, and there is a short thread about this topic.  The 5th or 6th post was from Keith, and simply said that he is not privy to what is going on, and apologized.

I have been a lapsed Mooseman for several years, having last done the international in '07, and the first year of the half-iron, in '05, before it was a 70.3 thing.  Prior to that, though, I did all three years of the very glorious Granite Ledges Triathlon, which was the exact same course as Moosey int'l -- except in late September.  G.L. remains one of my top five all-time favorite races, and even though the early June date (and its diminishment in the shadow of the 70.3 thing) of Mooseman didn't work well for me, I still had every intention of returning to it and reliving the challenging beauty of the international course.

I would like to think that Keith will bring it back at some point as Granite Ledges (think Phoenix, risen from the ashes) again, complete with late September date, but..............

Cry??

Yeah you would have to think that he, or someone else, would bring this back as a non-WTC event.  It's way too popular.

Newfound Lake is my home-turf and this being my first year doing tris, I was planning on the Olympic Moosemam course for June. This will be a big bummer if it's gone. Although I've thought all season long the event would be better in late August or early September...the weather seems to a little more stable this time of the year. When will we know what's going on?

I was hoping to do Mooseman next year, what a bust! The northeast has lost 2 ironman events. There is still Patriotman, which is in Freetown Ma. Real flat course. Half iron distance, just not the brand name. If your not far from Canada check out IM Treblant70.3 its in the same month. Im considering that or Rev3 as a Half leading to placid.

Consider Tupper Lake at a lead-up to Placid; at least you'd be smelling the same Adirondacks air!  And, it is a good deal less than the cost of any of the "branded" events just for entry, let alone for accommodations.  I cannot remember the name of the sweet old New England-style motel right next to transition at Tupper, but it is less than $100 for the night-before.

As for Tremblant, granted, it has some gorgeous lodgings right on site............but sweet mother of mercy, the cost of them!!!  "Deep pockets" rule the day up there!

I went to Mont Tremblant for training as well as for the 140.6 and didn't pay too much for lodging, but I didn't stay at the finish line.  The Comfort Inn is on the bike course, and has regular Comfort Inn prices.  For the 140.6 we rented a house on the run course for 10 people, making it very economical.

Hmmm.  Are you sure?  The HITS race at Hunter this year was June 9/10 (with the second one coming in a couple of weeks), but next year it is listed for June 29/30.  Also, the cost for the half the year was $250, and even though HITS has received some criticism for high prices for a first-year operation, I can't see them bringing it all the way down to $75.  And looking at the page for the June 29/30 races at Hunter, I couldn't fins any fees -- just a note that registration will open soon.

That's fairly crappy that HITS is scheduling Hunter Mountain half-iron next year as the same weekend as Tupper Lake.  It was sort of bad enough that Syracuse moved its date this year to the week before Tupper, and will be the same next year, and now HITS is also crowding the scene.  There are many, many, many weeks in a race season, even in the northeast, and I don't see why one race has to "challenge" another race.  This isn't about (or shouldn't be about) controlling the marketplace, or free enterprise, or dog-eat-dog (and don't get me started about WTC!!!!), and I would just like to see us all get along without jostling for date and race supremacy.

Which brings me to Mooseman........and then the intrusion of Rev 3's Quassy on the New England half-iron scene.  I am certain that Quassy chose the same weekend as Mooseman right from its first year, and I just couldn't figure out why that was necessary.  The only thing I could think of was that Rev 3 didn't want to intrude on the venerable Pat Griskus Triathlon in mid-June, and that's fair and laudable.

I also seem to think that Rev 3 viewed Quassy as (a) offering an alternative to WTC (fair enough....), and (b) having a good chance of corraling the NY/NJ/mid-Atlantic crowd that might not want to traipse up to central New Hampshire.   I suppose that's fair enough, too, but I never learned if it actually worked out that way, or whether Mooseman took a hit as a result of Quassy.  The part of me that is endlessly agitated by WTC says "Well, all right!".........but the part that thinks Keith Jordan (even if he is no longer associated with Moosey) walks on water thinks "Well, that sort of sucks".  And I REALLY hope posturing up against Rev 3 and Quassy wasn't behind Keith leaving Mooseman operations to --- whomever.

HITS is no longer showing "Hunter Mountain I" for June 29th, it is now a generic "Upper State NY".

Also, as far as I can tell, all of the HITS halves are opening up at $75.  I am eying up Naples right now at $75, rises tomorrow:

Naples

But I am doing Disney the very next day.  Now that would be quite the Goofy Weekend.

That's pretty remarkable --- and makes me slightly worried about the level of support on-course in terms of even marshals and police persons, let alone aid stations.

On the other hand, it maybe points out the huge profit margin that is achieved by some of the races that run for $275-$300 -- let alone the $250 that HITS was charging for their HIM this season.  It's all so confusing!

I too saw the "upper state", but when i clicked on it, it led me to HM.  But I guess the "upper state" suggests that HITS is hoping to end up in and around Cooperstown afterall, which was their plan going into the season.  i think it was daunting road projects that resulted in HM.

Stay tuned??

This is getting way to confusing and way more complicated then it needs to be. I feel like everyone should be on the same page, race directors and what not. its getting annoying. im trying to plan a season for next year leading to lake placid. it is a very long season in the northeast, starting close to the end of may going until october.

Have you seen this?  No longer an IM event, but Mooseman is back on with a new name. First weekend in June, as always.

I run and train at Mont Tremblant, but I still LOVE this race in NH.  Highly recommended.

Thank you for the update, I didn't know this.  That's great news.  I will likely skip this year but I am definitely open to coming back.

This is great news. Nice to see an excellent race continuing. Kudos to Pursuit Racing and Tritanium Sports.

One nice perk I noticed on the race website that I like a lot:

Unlimited race photo downloads?
That's right! All registered athletes will have full access to unlimited free full resolution downloads of images taken by a team of hand-picked professional photographers from Nuvision Action Image on race day.
