Getting closer. Bike is good. Swim better and better. Run sucks, as nagging injuries linger long. Looking more like a run_walk strategy. Its ok, this is my first and i want to complete and enjoy. How's everyone else doing?

Swim is good, run is good... bike I'm playing catch up. I've only had a handful of 90+ min rides and that has to change quickly.  I've had all winter to work on cycling (as I had planned) and procrastinated getting on the drainer as much as possible. Time is ticking away and I'm feeling the bike pressure!

I'm with Mad-Dog. My run is only up to 20 min long run due to rehab from stress fx. OTherwise I am pretty good.

Each leg seems to be fine. Swim is really strong - a 5K swim last week and one and two mile swims three times per week. Run is good - managing to keep a ten mile long run base and a second short run each week. Bike is good - daily bike commute of 16 miles round trip and a 45 - 50 miler once a week. Feeling good. Did this routine last year and got to the finish line of an April HIM.

Hey guys this is my first post and also my first triathlon I signed up a while back but never knew this thread existed or I would have been all over it. I'm from New orleans and to answer some of the questions about the race that I have heard is yes it is wetsuit legal and to the guy that asked how the roads are they are pretty rough in some areas I will be riding the course next month just to see exactly how it is but from what I hear is that if you are in the age group categories we will be battling the wind once we get outside the city. Once I make that ride I will post the sections that are bad.

As far as training it has been rough my swim sucks and I'm working on it as much as I can with some planned open water swims at the swim course my bike is decent but could get better and my run is fine. But being that this is my first HIM my goals are just to finish wether its first middle or last place.

Welcome RT12! Looking forward to hear your report. My training was going well until 3-4 weeks ago, then starting having some nagging injures(mainly with running). Being my first 70.3, i have now changed my goal from time bssed to finishing. Good luck with your training.

I have ridden the course 4 times. The roads are pretty good for the most part. No real bad sections come to mind, you never have to get out of your aero bars. There are several overpasses in the first 5 miles, they are not to steep but you have to use some caution on the descent because the wind is usually pretty bad there. 3 out of the 4 times I rode it there was a 20-25mph head wind on the way out which makes for a fast ride back. The course is flat with the exception of the overpasses, but be ready for about 25 miles of head wind. It will beat you up! As long as you mentally prepare for the wind you will be ok. If a warm front comes in we will have a south wind, if that is the case the wind will be in your face on the way back to T2.

The swim will be wet suit legal. I have never swam the new course. Practice your sighting in open water if possible there are lots of turns.

The run is flat with little shade. The temperature is usually pretty nice in April. Only once I remember it getting into the mid 80's or so race day. The wind usually does not affect the run course. The volunteers were great.

I think I might have created a race report for one of the races. It might cover something I forgot to mention above.

Well there you guys go Cajuntriguy answered most of the questions even the ones I had... hope the wind will be a head wind on the way out and not on the way back.

Does anyone know about what tempature the water will be? I don't have a triathlon wetsuit and don't really have the funds for one.

I am not sure what the water temperature will be but I can tell you it is usually barely wetsuit legal. If you dont have one you should not have any problem swimming without it.

odpaul7 - 2013-02-20 1:46 PM I'm just having a hard time finding a hotel!

your best bet may be to stay in the quarter where the race ends.

not much around the start. would avoid hotels in new orleans east and gentilly - trust me, i'm from there

I'm also looking for a place to stay but I'm on a budget. I don't mind driving 10-15 minutes on race morning. I'm just unsure of what part of NOLA to stay in. I'll be driving from Mobile, AL. How is the area to the East of the race?

If you don't mind driving a few and on a budget I would stay in Metairie it's about a 10 minute drive from race start and you can probably find a better deal I know there are a few hotel right off the Causeway exit you can try... But I would stay away from anything east of the race

Cajuntriguy - 2013-02-19 2:58 PM I have ridden the course 4 times.

Thanks for the course review. A friend did the 5150 last year and said the wind was horrible on the bike. Last weekend I did 90 min in 20-30mph crosswind on a straight out and back... talk about breaking your spirit. Ugh. I would rather ride hills any day! I knew to expect wind when I signed up. But I will be praying to the triathlon gods that it is a light headwind rather than a punishing crosswind on race day.

Looked up several hotels and Four Points is right next to Louis Armstrong park (finishing area) and is less than $150 per night. That's where I booked, cheapest hotel in the french quarter that seemed decent that I could find. Just throwing that out there for other people still to make reservations.
