Expert 1145 Ann Arbor, MI | Subject: Speedgoat 50k Predictions This year, Speedgoat Karl Meltzer's ridiculously technical 31 mile race in Snowbird, UT is part of the (mostly-European) Skyrunning series, which means a deeper, more international field including Kilian Jornet and Anna Frost. The race also marks the return of Anton Krupicka to the racing field after 18 months of injury. Max King, mountain running champ and Olympic trials qualifier for both the marathon and the Steeplechase, should be on Kilian's heels. Nick Clark is a superb athlete but likely still recovering from 3rd place at WS100, and Joe Grant just last week was 2nd at Hardrock, so I can't imagine they'll be on form. Then you bring a $10,000 prize purse into the equation, and you have a race that's symbolic in many ways -- international, severe mountains, prize money -- of the direction that top Ultras appear to be heading in the coming years. No doubt I'm taking Kilian and Frosty for the wins, but I'm also curious to see how many guys she'll chick and how far under the 5:43 previous CR Kilian will drop. Should be a good show! |

Subject: RE: Speedgoat 50k Predictions im takin anton as having the biggest burn in the belly for the win after the long vacation. clark #3 simply due to the tired legs and killian is a beast and odds are very much in his favor but i am hoping anton is back to his old self. |

Veteran 485 | Subject: RE: Speedgoat 50k Predictions I would like to see AK do well too. I am a fan of his mostly because of Unbreakable and his reaction at the finish line. He looked at Roes with this smile...it was more than a smile. It said, how did you do that and oh my god I can't believe you did it. Amazed, proud and respectful all at the same time. At least that was my interpretation of the scene. Anton, if you are reading feel free to correct. |

Suppose it makes perfect sense to the RD. Yeah, I'm interested to see how this all plays out. My understanding is that in other Skyrunning events in Europe you can take the fastest line down the mountain and not follow the switchbacks, etc along the outlined course route, but in the US that's not allowed. RD Karl Meltzer is quite outspoken, so I'm sure he'll be vocal about why the race results, CR, and prize money are being handled as they are. Lots of people are asking why he wasn't just DQ'd. The big question is, did the race organizers make it clear in writing for this race that you are not allowed to take the most direct line? |

Subject: RE: Speedgoat 50k Predictions I guess my predictions were it a bit off for the overall finishes. Oh well. Butttt wow! This is news to me about the course "straightening" per say. I went off this forum and read what I could about the big cheat and based on what I am seeing about his excuse and what he did I call this a big fat DQ! http://www.irunfar.com/2012/07/karl-meltzer-talks-about-his-2012-speedgoat-50k-decision.html |

Subject: RE: Speedgoat 50k Predictions BigDH - 2012-08-01 8:19 AM Dultra - 2012-07-30 6:52 PM thanks for posting that. I am not sure what you are saying about killian's excuse though?I can no longer find what Kilian had on his blog, but what he said was that he was not familiar with the rules of following the course in America and was following Skyrunning rules. I am sure what he said is floating on the net somewhere. The Skyrunning rules that he is familiar with has a penalty for not following the course - 3 minutes to DQ....and it appears they assigned a penalty to him recently. However the ISF rules also state that their rules prevail over local rules. To me it seems like he should be more than familiar with the rules of the land running WS a couple times and if you are cutting the course to clearly pass someone who isn't cutting the course it is dirty racing. To clarify before this goes anywhere else. I am a big fan of Kilian and was more disappointed than anything else about this ordeal. Here is the official rule book for ISF: http://www.skyrunning.com/images/stories/pdfs/isf-sky-rules-2012.pdf Page 16 has the specifics for this situation. My favorite reason for DQ is "G" |

Regular 69 Tallahassee | Subject: RE: Speedgoat 50k Predictions I'm always a little disappointed when something like this happens at a sporting event. I'm a big fan of Kilian and Karl as well after having met him at the Pinhoti 100 last year. I'm glad it seems to have worked out. Hopefully the race will continue to be affiliated with the Sky Running series and attract the Europeans to run in America. |

My favorite reason for DQ is "G" okay, I get it, so they gave killian a 3 minute penalty which still allowed him to win the skyrunning race but the record and prize money for the race are up to the races rd. |
