Looking for any "must" 70.3 events. We've got a small group of 5 who want to schedule a 70.3 every year. The #1 thing we're looking for is atmosphere. Trips that we'll talk about for the rest of our lives.  We started with IM Mooseman (New Hampshire) this year in June and it was fun, but the course was not spectator friendly and the vibe was boring.   Toughness of course really isn't an issue- we'll train for that.

What about Hawaii, Oceanside, Vineman, NOLA, Florida, Miami?  Just a few ideas we had.

I've done Hawaii twice and both times were an amazing experience.  I plan on going back again next year.  There is not a huge crowd presence even at the finish line but the course is like no other.  The swim is in crystal clear water where you can see coral, fish, etc. throughout.  The bike is on the north half of the IM course and riding the lava fields and the climb to Hawi you get a real sense of one of the most special places in the triathlon world.  The first time I turned onto the Queen K highway it literally raised the hair on the back of my neck.

In addition to the race, you cannot go wrong laying on the beach or seeing some of the other sights on the Big Island like the lava fields or spending time at the Kona Brewing Company.

Wildflower should qualify as memorable.

And don't forget Savageman. But include a new cassette for your bike in your budget for that one.

Mont Tremblant 70.3 got good reviews in its inaugural year this year.

The new Rev3 half in Williamsburg, starting in 2013 should be a good destination.

St croix wins the atmosphere contest and its such a fun trip! and every course you ever do after that will be fast and easy.  Its by far my favorite annual race.

You want to talk about the trip for the rest of you life, or talk about the race?

Savageman.

I've only watched Oceanside, but it seemed like a nice race that isn't too oversized and overwhelming (in terms of crowds.)  Also there's plenty of opportunity for any spectators you might bring to get a good location to see you in various parts of the race.

Aside from roads that are crap, Vineman was a great experience.  Anyone that signs up for the SG 70.3 is a stud in my book.

Another vote for Cozumel.  Can usually get flights/deals on the cheap and those all inclusive places are perfect for groups.  Course is flat and fast and the swim is in crystal clear water.  I've got a friend trying to put together a big group for the full IM Cozumel in 2013.

I have to say that Hawaii is my favorite for so many reasons.
