... I planned on riding the trainer today and doing a small run.

Now I ate half a pizza (as my wife had a busy day too) and my knee hurts just sitting around.

So I am icing my knee and thinking that cycling or running might not be a good idea...

I think I need to play some video games

*sigh*

We all have those days. I ate some chocolate, potato chips (rare for me) and didn't get to my measly 3.5 mile run (planned for first thing in the morning) until 8 PM! Laziness happens. Maybe your body was just making a kind request for a rest day.

Aftermy race on Saturday, I invited my friend over (who competed with me) and we and our families sat in our pool, ate food and drank beer/wine/cocktails all afternoon.  On Sunday I did it again with my extended family.  On Monday, I got back in gear for my next race.  At the end of the day, sometimes you need to do exactly what you are doing.

My biggest problem is that my knee is still not fully operational.

I am contemplating if some full rest for a week or two might be the way to go?

Before I go to a doc I think I should try resting up more.

While I initially though it was ITBS, I am now leaning towards upper runners-knee.

Because sitting at the office all day causes discomfort and minor pain above the knee cap, under the quadriceps.

While relaxing, you should start devising some strategies for that knee (so you're not really "sitting around" but rather being proactive in helping your injury heal):

-ice it

-take some glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM or arnica (also topical) or a combo of some or all of these

-if you can't find topical arnica, try tiger balm, available at CVS (warning: very smelly like medicine)

-foam roll all around but NOT including the knee: quad, hammy, calf; or, if no foam roller, schedule yourself a massage

Hope some or all of these things help to alleviate the issue!

I heard of tiger balm and now it is supposed to be very good.

But what is the other stuff?

Would "Icy-Hot" work as well (got some at home).

I am icing the knee once I get home after work, unless anyone has ideas how to ice in the office?

Does your knee hurt just above the knee cap?

Does it hurt when you drive - pushing on the gas pedal?

Between kneecap and quadriceps (leg muscle).

No pain walking, discomfort after sitting at the desk.

No pain pushing on stuff (Gas pedal or a wall when sitting down)

Can run about 1.5 miles pain/discomfort free.

Did a run Saturday night and had pain/discomfort of and on durign my 32mile bike ride sunday.

When are they going to invent a tri video gain. I want to see a level where you try to bore all your friends as quickly as possible by talking about your training regimen.

500 pts for mentioning compression gear ...

If your work has a freezer and you work at a desk, it'd be easy enough to bring a ice gel pack and wrap it while seated. Then you can throw the ice pack in the freezer for a bit an repeat. Don't know if that's a doable option at your job

In my experience, Tiger Balm seems to have a more healing affect, where as Icy Hot is more of just temporary pain relief.

Arnica is an herb and used holistically to reduce inflammation and promote healing.  The nicer vitamin shops or health food stores sell it in both topical and oral form.  I like using it both ways at once and I've found it sold as a package deal.

She should have gotten her own. And maybe you should try Wii Fit?

But more seriously, if you need some time off, could you swim like crazy during that time? It's one way people get better there. And if you do, go at it with recovery methods for the knee. I didn't specifically read all of Noelle's suggestions, but enough to see that it at least had the general idea.

Not to be destructive here, but we swim 3 times a week.

About 7or so years ago I broke my arm below the shoulder joint.

This causes my left shoulder to hurt if I swim too much or too intense.

With the current load I am in permanent acceptable discomfort, so I don't want o go too crazy on the swim.

Cue music:

You know, this morning I woke up and I decided, you know, instead of waiting for a good day to happen, you know, waiting around through ups and downs, you know I just thought

We gonna have a good day

And all my homies gonna ride today

And all these mommies look fly today

And all we gonna do is get by today, hey

We gonna have a good day

And aint nobody gonna cry today

Cuz aint nobody gonna die today

You can save that drama for another day, hey

We gonna have a good day

Sorry, this song always perks me up when I'm feeling a bit off.Cool
