Subject: suit color

Hi,

I'm new to the triathlon world (haven't done one yet). I'm about to order a trisuit and i'm wondering... does the color matter? I mean we mostly bike and run in that suit during summer and we often get temperatures above 90. I really like that black suit (fits my gear) but i think the blue would be a wiser decision...

Thank you

just make sure there is not just white on private parts or you may be displaying a little more than you intend to; once the suit is wet

Black is probably safest.  I started doing tris when I lived in a tropical country and work a black 2-piece and it wasn't too hot... it's different from wearing like a black t-shirt.

I have a blue 2XU with white sides and trim. I have to soak it in Oxyclean after a lake swim to get it back to white. Algae in the water turns the white into khaki. But as far as the fabric goes, it has held up well and keeps me cool.

Mine is black and blue with a little white on the back.  It was the only color available, or I would have chosen something lighter for AZ.  Not sure it matters much at 110, though. Laughing  Most important is that it is colors you like.  The dark is more common, but as long as I'm in spandex, I may as well stand out.  My next set will be multi-color or flourescent - or Auburn colors (I'm an Auburn Grad.).

To answer, I noticed the dark colors in direct sun, but after two sessions I got used to it.

I have 2 2XU single piece suits one is all black and one light Gray and white like the blue one mentioned. the gray and white is definately cooler to run in then the black especially if its sunny. The black one tends to get used on cool over cast days and in early spring late fall more then in mid summer.

Black is slimming.

And doesn't show algae, river grime, blood, slopped Gatorade, etc. And it's readily available.

White tends to be see-thru when wet (so it's fine for some panels and not others).

Many top trisuits use ColdBlack or other technologies where the suit absorbs the visible light spectrum (i.e. looks black), but reflects IR (heat) wavelengths.  The result is a black suit that is as cool as a white suit.  Doesn't look like the 2XU suits have this (looking at their site).

I have two trisuits.  Both are Zoot Ultra tri's.  One is solid black with a small blue trim.  The other is white blue combo chest area/ grey bottom.  Conventional wisdom would say the white top one is cooler but I can't tell a difference.  I have race in the black one at 102 degree temp (Heatwave Tri) and it has been just fine.  I believe your main concern is how well the material wicks sweat.

Stick with black.

Seriously, some of that has to be photoshopped.  You'd think somebody would have said something.  That's just nasty looking.

2XU does utilize this technology but not in every suit.  This type of tech is found "Dark Shield" and "Ice X" fabrics.  I inquired about the difference and this what 2XU said...the Dark Shield basically just reflects infrared heat rays, while the Ice-X reflects infrared heat rays and draws heat from the body out having the ability to cool the skin by up to 5.4 degrees F.

I agree with some others: Despite conventional wisdom, I have a black suit and it never bothers me.  And I prefer the protection of knowing I am not showing anything off that I don't want to.  Also, I get really dirty in a race (sand, sweat, road spray all too often, etc).  I just feel better in the black suit.

We (Rocket Science Sports) did a lab study of different suit materials and found that white reduces sweat loss and heart rate over black materials. Even Cold Black and other technologies are going to be hotter than a comparable white material. Even white cotton was cooler than a leading black material over 1 hour of exertion (under a heat lamp, on a trainer).

As for white being see through, we line the inside of our white suits with a dark lining to protect privacy.

And yes, white does show splashed beverages, spilled goo, etc more than black, but hey YOU ARE RACING :-) You'll have kick azz finisher pics and it all comes out in the wash.
