Pre-race routine:

B: oatmeal crisp bar & fruit grain bar 1 1/2 hours before race. Just enough food to get me going.
Event warmup:

Got to the park about 7:20am (8:00 start time). Walked around looking for friends, but NONE of my running friends were there. They must've weinied out due to the rain.

Comments:

I was at 8:09 at the first mile, 17:05 at the second, 26:44 at the third. I sprinted out the last .1, as I was determined not to let the girl in front of me beat me! I placed 56th out of 126 men, and 18th of 29 in my age group.
What would you do differently?:

Had it not been cool and misty, I wouldn't have taken my poncho. Pace was good throughout, but I would've liked a little more water just prior to the run (5-8 ozs would've been plenty). My cheering section didn't show up until AFTER the start, so I had to tie my jacket around me, and I didn't have anyone to help with minor things like water bottles, etc. All in all, I'm quite proud of my time and effort, and I'm wanting to find another 5k race!
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around a bit, found my cheering section and walked home. Long, warm shower!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I think I've built my base just fine, although I could use some speedwork now. I guess I'll start adding more interval training, to build up the speed, and pushing my pace ever so gently each time I run.

Great race Joe!!! You were pretty fast!

Best of  luck with your speedwork...it takes a lot of motivation to work on that!

Nice work...did you beat the girl?  I got smoked by plently of them in my 10K.  One was about 15 and she went flying by me.

Good luck on your next race.

The overall winner is 45. His 43 year old wife came in 5th overall (1st women). I think I beat their combined time by 2 seconds! I've got a great picture of the girl I beat hard on my heels right before the finish line. As soon as I get them scanned in and cropped a little, I'll post them. (Her name is Nicole Pilger - found that out on the official time sheets. If she and I run in any more races together, I could see a bit of a rivalry starting!)
