Subject: Presta adaptor nut?
I'm sorry if this is a dumb questions, but I've only had my road bike for two months, and I have no idea what that random nut at the bottom of the stem of the priesta valve could be.  I've tried to look up some information on google and youtube and the answers seem to be conflicting.  Some say it's there to keep the valve in place, others say it's an adaptor for the other valve type (how? It doesn't look like it...) then some other people say just take it off.

Yep it's to keep in place.  More noticeable when you pump without it, the valve will be pushed in almost all the way.

If you've ever used shorter presta valves with slightly deeper wheels, you'd know exactly what that thing's for

Leaving it on costs nothing and does help when putting the pump head onto the valve.

It's also very useful when changing the tube out too!

I thought you were talking about the adapter, the little $1 piece of brass that adapts presta to schreader.  I always keep one of those in my tool kit, never know when you'll get a flat if there will be a presta pump around.

Hard core roadies tend to say that you don't need either that nut or the plastic cap that covers the end of the valve.  I find it a lot easier to get a pump on the valve with the nut in place especially if the tube is low or empty.

Thanks for the clarification!  They both worked loose, is why I noticed them only just now.  I'll twist them back tight against the bottom to hold the valve in place.

Here is a picture of the presta valve adapter. It's a good idea to have one just in case you need to air up your presta valve with a schraeder equipped hose.
